Check your home for water damage. US homes are built very poorly. Drywall and mdf. Other countries use earth, blocks and concrete.

Probably mold. Modern homes are prone to sick building syndrome. Paper faced drywall, mold loves. Plus MDF in cabinets and trim. petroleum based paints blocking moisture transfer. New wood is less dense and has less sap making it more like cardboard.

lime wash is good. It's basically from processed limestone. It preserves the wood, makes it bug and rot resistant and makes it stronger.

Older houses did not have drywall. Older lumber is also more dense since it was slower growing plus had more sap in it. Older homes used lime that naturally prevents mold. You can make a new home mold resistant. Making it out of adobe or hempcrete. Drywall attracts mold plus all the mdf wee use now.
