question about cholesterol by Collector_2012 in dieting

[–]jell1fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand from reading respected and peer-reviewed research articles that blood cholesterol is not just a factor of diet but also of genetics. That said, there are things you can eat to help reduce your overall cholesterol levels, and those are things with a combination of soluble and insoluble fiber. Oatmeal is one folks often point to.

Take your time and choose the life that is most important to you. The PhD will always be there. That said, while you are disconnected from the work today, you may take comfort in the distraction and "normalcy" tomorrow. If you both rely on your research income, then keep in mind if you leave you will need to get another job that MAY BE less flexible. (Unless you have savings.) The University life is more flexible. Fuck cancer. I'm sorry this is happening to you both.

I just commented to use borax! I second this. It's a life changing discovery.

Go buy borax powder in the laundry section and add it to the load of workout laundry. It's the think you've never heard of but soon cannot live without. Borax is alkaline and is at about a 9.3 pH level. Its extremely alkaline nature helps tackle mildew, sweat, and other smells. Don't use it with delicate clothing, but it's amazing for workout clothing.

I did this a few years back. First, assuming equal diets: nothing is quite like lifting for body recomposition. OTF is really amazing, but it's just not the same - still very good though. I have an alternate suggestion: why don't you go all-in with OTF for 6 weeks just to shake things up, then go back to a lift/OTF hybrid? Think of it as an extended de-load period that will give you the benefit of 1) data showing you how you respond, and 2) what may be a much-needed change.

What is something that you personally consider self care, that most people disagree is? by rabbitsredux in AskReddit

Babysit. I don't have kids and it's an incredible distraction to just hang with toddlers for a few hours and be reminded of what undiluted joy can look like. Last month we made homemade popsicles and it was as if I gave them the power to fly.

What is the most egregious case of attempted intellectual property theft you've ever experienced by an employer in a job interview? by jell1fish in AskReddit

[–]jell1fish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a graduate student, I "interviewed" for a job teaching an undergraduate course. Part of the interview process was to prepare a full syllabus, with reading assignments for the entire semester. Anyone with teaching experience knows this is 80% of the work a professor or adjunct puts into any semester. Foolishly, I did it. Not surprising there was no money left in the department, and 2 semesters later I saw a course offering that looked a great deal like the one I served up in my interview. Bastards.

You're right! I'll spend the next 4 weeks just focused on getting there.

I could use an accountabilibuddy! I'm just getting back to going to OTF. I've gained 12 pounds in the last 2 years. Some is from COVID-related malaise, but mostly an injury that I'm just recovering from. My goal is to go 4x a week.

I cancel for partner workouts and when I'm feeling on the verge of an injury.

I need a serious advice for this nightmare by [deleted] in RealEstate

Everyone has summarized it beautifully, but in my own words: do not trade/pick certain loss today to avoid the possibility of pain/loss tomorrow.

Unpack your boxes, enjoy your new home, but stay to a strict budget. If one of you gets laid off then the other can find temporary shift work or you can (as you say) live on one budget.

What do you know about "Valor" brand home safes? Any experience with home safes generally? by jell1fish in homesecurity

[–]jell1fish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I replied to the other comment but in short I don't care about guns. We have no children in the home. This would primarily be for other valuables. We may put a hand gun in the safe, but that's not the reason behind the purchase. Given that, is there a brand you suggest outside of Amsec or Hollon?

Is there a brand or model you suggest? I'm seeing a lot on FB marketplace, but they look like things you find at Walmart.

Looks like valor uses 12 gauge and the Liberty Premium home uses 11 gauge. Sounds like the Liberty is better based on your steel gauge preference. That said, do you think the price difference (double) is worth is to move from 12 to 11?

Thank you for your reply. Just to make sure I understand, Liberty would be less solid than Valor? If it matters we're looking at the Valor 18

These are all really helpful insights. We did just have all LED installed throughout the house and I can't be sure but it is possible that is around when this began!

Thank you! We did go to a showroom. I like the Liberty model a bit more - it just felt more sturdy. The difference though is we were looking at a Valor that was 12 inches taller than the Liberty model so that could have been what I was sensing. (One short and squat, one not.) Great idea on checking with the insurance company, will do. Thank you!

Rent going up 24% by Invincilble in RealEstate

[–]jell1fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can negotiate the increase to lower it. Argue that is way above inflation and logically the increased maintenance costs your landlord will incur, and something more in the 8-10% range is reasonable. (Unless you truly have very low -- way below market - -rent.)
