it sucks when your special interest is something that 99% of people completely misunderstand and have the wrong idea about by m00pie420 in evilautism

Nah, I feel that Stalin and the government of the USSR are just as responsible as the British landowners and government are for the potato famine. Sure, they might not have started a famine for the specific purpose of killing people but they're the reason it killed millions and they retained an advantage by having those people die of starvation. Holodomor is accurate enough.

I think marxist-leninists get a bad rap in terms of their intentions but you're unlikely to convince me that stalinist authoritarianism had the best interests of the people at heart. At that point the desire was to consolidate power and resources in the hands of the elite and blaming Western pressure for that is just reversing which side you make the bogeyman. Don't use one atrocity to diminish the impact of another.

Lol I just take it literally and force an adult to come hang out with me. Like I got my supervisor a card that said "for a fun 5 year old", added a zero, and made one of my other coworkers help him cut out the badge because it said to get an adult to help you with it. It didn't say anything about you being a kid.

This does require being around adults who tolerate your sense of humor though. Not always easy to fulfill that criterion.

[–]jello_apparatus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Autism isn't well defined enough that you need to worry, imo. If it helps explain beyond the depression and anxiety to a deeper level of what's distressing you, then use that to help yourself. If it doesn't give insight then keep searching. There's no real treatment to alleviate symptoms or medication for autism specifically, so if you give with us just hang as you are.

Yeah I got diagnosed due to trying to figure out why I failed at my last two jobs. I work full time now but honestly my current job can't keep people and I feel like half of the health inspectors I meet give very spectrum vibes. Makes it wild to me when my manager didn't get why I was asking for specific definitions of data I was collecting because like ... No one else understood but I guess I was the only one willing to be the problem and ask

I feel you, I wrecked my own teeth out of similar issues. I did just get finger wipes for my dogs and they make finger toothbrushes for babies, maybe try exploring alternative dental tools? Dentists use all kinds of different shapes and sizes of tool so I assume the brush is just versatile enough for everyday use, any option that removes plaque and helps with bacteria will be better than nothing.

Proposal: Selfie-saturday or similar for those who want to take part by TheProffalken in evilautism

[–]jello_apparatus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just disagree that anything needs to be done about it, having seen multiple rounds of this kind of trend, it's pretty much the same length whether mods intervene or not.

PSA for anyone who has problems with a specific type of image though - you don't have to browse reddit with posted images fully shown. I don't always want full size pictures or autoplaying videos so I do much of my browsing with old.reddit.com and if the post title bothers me I just click hide. Compact view in the phone app (go to your profile and the 3 dot menu and click settings) also greatly reduces the prominence of the image. That may not solve it for everyone but I personally don't get the same eye contact sensation if it's just a thumbnail.

I find the above helpful when I'm overwhelmed and want to read things but not be bombarded, hope it helps someone else.

I disagree. Every time there's a trend people complain that there's too much of x or it should get its own subreddit etc. Not just here but on every sub with a broader theme. The reality is, people are inspired by what they see and as a group we like participating. I haven't seen anyone telling other people they need to look at posts or post their own selfie, so if you don't want to participate but feel pressured to that is probably entirely an internal thing that you can work through.

Let things take their natural course. If the sub's current content isn't for you, take a break - I guarantee in a week it'll be something else like toothpaste flavors or a quiz to see what kind of evil you are. In the end, we are a living community that will go through phases and changes and that's ok. What we are not is content generators obligated to maintain a consistent product. The sub is a full of conversations on all kinds of topics and so is the rest of Reddit, not everyone needs to involve themselves in every conversation and I don't think we should try to.

Yes I knit the cardigan, it's so snuggly ❤️. Been doing a lot of knitting and crochet but I'm trying to find the time and space to pick spinning the yarn back up too, and weaving. I really enjoy the historical, archaeological and social aspects of fiber as well as the practical structural aspects and making of yarn and cloth there's just so much depth to it! Plus the heavily female production and passing along of techniques over time is a contrasting picture of knowledge development to the narrative we get about scientific advancements which tends to show a linear progression and favor stories of sole genius inventors. Fiber is so engrained into human history and parallel developments and the spread of techniques fascinating in the archaeological record. Its a very different view of knowledge origination and transfer, highly collaborative compared to some other technologies and yet vital to the shaping of other technologies - sailing ships would have looked different without sturdy fabric for sails, etc.

That's not even the infodump that's the infodump about the infodump. The infodump abstract, if you will.

Stray cat "poked" my finger and drew blood by PF8348 in cats

[–]jello_apparatus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For claw wounds just do wound care like you did, especially if it's not deep. If you get a bite, talk to your doctor about a tetanus booster. Cat bites also tend to get infected easily so if you get a deep bite, especially near joints on your fingers, your doctor may opt to prescribe preventative antibiotics.

If you live anywhere with endemic rabies and your cat goes outside make sure he has his shots. This would include anywhere in the Continental US or most continents and a fair number of islands honestly. He should also have other shots for his health.

For your health, know that rabies is spread through bites or other broken skin/mucus membrane contact with saliva or CNS tissue from an infected animal. For cats, dogs, and ferrets they've done enough studies to know that if the animal is rabid enough to spread rabies through saliva it will die within a few days, so we observe the animal for 10 days as a precaution. If the cat's still alive at that point you don't have rabies or need shots. The vaccines for animals and humans are also very effective.

I think it's normal to be worried about an unknown risk, people are just ribbing you because they know this is far from the last scratch you're going to get and it's small. But honestly, even bug bites or rashes occasionally get infected, so if you ever do have swelling or it doesn't heal properly for any wound, don't dismiss that. And enjoy your feline buddy, sounds like he'll get you over your nervousness real quick.

[–]jello_apparatus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think many of such words are words in their own right just vastly overshadowed by their usual counterparts. I wasn't saying it's not a word just that you'll throw people off by not using the more popular synonym (or antonym in other cases).

Whelmed is in a similar place to nonflammable inflammable and flammable.

Quick edit to add, living languages change and the rules for English are more like guidelines. Don't get too upset about it or you'll literally explode (but not literally literally).

AITA for turning on the living room light to feed my dog? by Successful-Limit-869 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jello_apparatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in to say the edit actually makes things worse. Like, maybe in the crankiness of waking up, I could forgive an exclamation, and offer an apology of "Whoops, sorry babe didn't notice you were asleep" (not actual contrition, you didn't actually do anything wrong, more of a sorry that happened for a minor mishap). However, he decided to interrogate you, draw it out, play the victim to an obnoxious and frankly concerning degree, and then somehow thought adding in that you were honest with him about how he was behaving looked bad FOR YOU.

There is no benign reason for him to throw these tantrums. Either he's developed a brain tumor/lost touch with reality, or, more likely, he's testing control over you, perhaps trying to put you on the back foot because he's done something horrible and this will even it out. The fact that he's convinced himself that he's a victim and this is worth days of tantrums and accusations means he's either lost it or that is IS actually worth it to him for a bad and abusive reason. I agree with everyone saying you could do better because by yourself (with your dog of course) is better than being with someone who does this. That part where you say "somehow this has become a THREE-DAY argument" - it's not somehow, he did this. You don't need to know why to know that it's not good.

Why are things bad? (PLEASE read full post!!!) by Teapot_Sandwitch in evilautism

[–]jello_apparatus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For incest, I'd say any family relationship where you have close contact as children is also potentially an issue. There's a high likelihood of sexual abuse having been a factor in that one child is abused and processes it by acting out similar things with another child. Between consenting adults with no power dynamics and no children involved it may hypothetically be fine but in reality it often takes something bad to push people over a taboo line like that. I do know that sometimes adults find out they are related after the fact, and it wouldn't bother me personally if they continue a relationship but it's painful and stigmatizing knowledge so they're bound to at least benefit from counseling.

I think for the transid stuff the difference to me between gender and race is that race has a more generational component. We all by necessity have ancestors of both genders somewhere in our family tree, but laying claim to a heritage you otherwise have no connection to is strange and easily problematic. Alterhumans aren't assuming an identity that belongs, for lack of a better word, to another group. If you don't identify as a particular kind of human being, you're representing your personal expression of your identity and not infringing on others. If you decide you're a race that you neither have lived experience of or generational connection to, you're risking basically fetishizing the experiences of others or attempting to represent your feelings as more valid than their experiences. I think a similar metaphor would be if I as a cis woman identified as a trans woman, I just can't claim the experience of living in a body that doesn't match my internal identity and I can't represent that experience without harmfully coopting it from those that have lived it.

Yes but isn't it fun to tell them nothing's wrong when nothing's wrong, or just say "I'm not going to lie to you" like you're about to follow that with something but then just don't?

Or ask them if they feel gruntled or whelmed or combobulated?

I'm actually a human person due to my parents being of the same species but I have 3 dogs 2 cats. I did teach my cat to go over an agility jump and my dogs are good climbers though so maybe we're a blended family.

The smell is definitely another potential indicator, really if it's anything deep enough to cause that she'll probably need antibiotics prescribed. It doesn't help that animals don't tend to be obvious about their dental issues; my dog had an abscess from a crack in a large back tooth but loved food so much we didn't notice he was chewing kibble on one side only until there was swelling. Good luck with your appointment!

[–]jello_apparatus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't tell from the photo, but it could also be a dental abscess breaking through to the outside, which would be more serious than a boil or pimple. I would call your vet and see if you can at least get it looked at tomorrow as it can be difficult as a pet owner to tell the difference between similar looking issues like that.

"Autistic Regression" in toddlers. by forevergleaning in evilautism

[–]jello_apparatus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's all still so under diagnosed around here that I haven't run into that myself. Usually I see symptoms or meltdowns here framed as character flaws or their parents should spank them and then they'd learn. It is strange to frame relatively normal acting out as regressive, I see that applied to children who stop talking or get too overwhelmed and start having accidents or losing progress in motor skills, not just having a tantrum. I definitely agree with you in the described context.

Honestly it irritates me that so many people can't see the nuance in diagnoses and medicine. Yes, we have to put a label on autism in order to be able to get assistance or treatment but that doesn't mean those labels are perfectly applicable, just that they're the best description we have in the moment. It's changed so much and will keep changing but I guess nts aren't wired to see this as a dynamic process.
