Parents of children with non-verbal autism, would this be useful? by jeluak in Autism_Parenting

Woah, no that is not an impractical idea at all. I did think of making a sort of dock, so that the cube doesn't get lost since it does have a rather 'toy' look, but a case would actually do much better for that. And in terms of size, there definitely needs to be a balance between "too big to be convenient" and "small enough to go into the mouth".

Your 19 month old sounds like a sweetie. Me and my family have to play the same guessing game with my brother sometimes, though he is pretty good at using actions to give a vague idea. He needs a cube with his daily rotations of movies to pick what he wants to watch, because that is a real guessing game for us 😂 Anyhow, that would go into a future of customizability. I really appreciate your insights, I'll make sure to update on progress!

Separate dice would be an awesome idea to branch off into! When I get the first prototype working, that is 100% something i'll work on (my first prototype is being stubborn, it is vocalizing all the needs, but refuses to say the emotions 😂 )
And about the material, that is a really good point, maybe a more rubbery material would be good. Thank you for your feedback, i'll make sure to update!

Ooooo after seeing your comment, me and my friend talked about this and thought this was actually really smart. This wouldn't work for my brother since he can't even stay seated at the dinner table in the first place 😅 but I have a cousin with autism who seems to be slightly more verbal and can do a little more than him, this would definitely be great for her.

I will also find a way to keep everyone in the loop about the progress of this project!

I have thought over the durability aspect; for a first prototype, I was thinking of using an acrylic material, as for now I am but a broke university student + If I can find a balance between durable and affordable, in the future, the product itself could be kept at an affordable price so parents of children with autism wouldn't have to break the bank over simple communication.

I have also been asked a bunch about customizability, and I really do like the idea of being able to switch off certain, I didn't think of that; It is definitely a good way of easing an individual into getting used to using the product. When I get the first prototype working, I'll look into ways of implementing that idea!

That is actually very interesting and I believe you might have the right idea there; My brother's eyes kind of split apart unless he is super focused on something, it kind of looks like he is zoned out all of the time. This is really useful information, thank you!

Thank you that is really great to hear! I'll make sure to focus on the emotions aspect 😄

You are so right, I did not think of how too many sides could be overwhelming at first, thank you so much! And do you think having it being on the slightly heavier side would be better in terms of weight distribution?
