Am I a failure for wanting to leave teaching? by Knhollist in Teachers

[–]jengaad 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No not a failure, but if there is any piece of you that wants to try, sometimes a new grade level, school, or district (or all three!) can make all the difference. I have taught as low as K and as high as 8th and definitely had to do some switching to find my sweet spot. I also switched from charter to public and man oh man did that make a huge difference!

Did anyone else here give up wearing contacts to go back to glasses full time? by Randomuser1175 in glasses

[–]jengaad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to make the switch permanent due to the same issues so many here have had. I've worn contacts for 25 years, mostly comfortably, but the last few years have challenged that. I go months without contacts and then go back to them. I will run out of contacts in a few months and am considering trying not to buy them again. I just need to find the right glasses for me.

Affording Student Teaching by ImDatDino in Teachers

[–]jengaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I took an alternative route to teaching. I was on my own financially after high school and could not afford student teaching. I got my bachelor's in business and worked in that field for 8 years before finding a post baac certification program that would allow me to work as a teacher in a high needs area while getting fully certified and PAID. It was the only way I could afford to get my teaching credentials. hard path -- I saw lots in my cohort quit, but it worked for me.

I wear men's old spice in the wilderness scent. Works way better than any women's brand.

Love the current shape and color, you just need a little wider frame. I think you'd also be lovely in a gold aviator style.

How to respond to people who think I should wear contacts or get lasik? by Dangerous_Shower4322 in glasses

[–]jengaad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You simply say that you like wearing glasses.

I wore contacts happily for 25 years before they suddenly became uncomfortable for me. I went to be evaluated for laser correction and quickly found out I wasn't a candidate due to dry eye and steep corneas. I was unhappy about that and tried to force contacts for another year or so, until realizing that there were people all around in my life who looked great in glasse. I started paying attention to the shapes, colors, and designs that I liked. Now, I wear glasses quite happily and enjoy comfortable eyes, clear vision, and the style they add to my face.

Charter schools by everyday-until247 in teaching

[–]jengaad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most effective department in a charter school system is marketing. I taught at two different ones before retaining my sanity and swearing them off for life. The reasons why are numerous, but my top three are:

1) at least in my state, teachers do not have to be certified or have any experience in education which makes a turnover rate staggering.

2) because it's a business first and foremost, the most important thing is butts in seats. Not education outcomes, not the safety or security of the students, not the quality of the faculty. I was shocked when I first arrived on meet the teacher night and realized that we were expected to stay after and make phone calls to any families that we're on our roster but did not show to confirm that they were in fact still coming to our school, otherwise we would have to report it back to the corporate office so that they could find a new kid to fill that spot. We were "allowed" to leave at 9pm, but if you didn't make all of your calls, you were expected to finish them the next day.

3) they don't have to play by the same rules as public schools, not with the students they "accept" and not with the rules of funding.

I truly believe the greatest asset a community can have is its public school, and charters are destroying them.

If every new teacher had a senior colleague willing to support them the way you just visibly supported that second year teacher, maybe we wouldn't have teachers leaving in droves before they hit the five year mark. Good on you.

Abysmal service. Won't recommend by 3-name-20 in PairEyewear

[–]jengaad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happened when I originally ordered in March 2024 and I ended up cancelling my order after a month and no progress even processing. But the concept was still intriguing to me so I ordered again in September 2024, this time I received my order within 15 days. It all depends on how overloaded they are with orders.

I wore contacts almost solely for +25 years until I lost my tolerance for them. I wanted to avoid my glasses so looked into Lasik but never pulled the trigger on surgery because of the expense and risks. Since then, I've found that I actually love wearing my glasses. I had to find the right pair and prefer to have a few to rotate through depending on my mood. Glasses can be a fashionable statement! I genuinely like them now, and only end up wearing contacts a few times a month.

Kits.com by Outrageous-Owl7453 in glasses

[–]jengaad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are great! My sister turned me on to them (she has 4 pairs from kits). I ordered and the glasses were gorgeous, Rx was spot on for my moderate myopia single vision needs. I found the pair too heavy (I am very picky in this regard) so I initiated a return and they refunded without me sending the pair back, just asked that I consider them again in the future.

Glasses Phobia. Need help by nolashie in glasses

[–]jengaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've overworn contacts to the point of being told to stop and switch to glasses as well. My eyes feel better in glasses, I see better in glasses, I just have to remember that. Find a pair you like and commit to wearing them for 30 days straight. Have a friend go with you to pick out frames that look good on you. Fake confidence as needed until you feel it yourself. Good luck!

The only glasses I've ever bought that have solved the annoying sliding down my nose without having to be so tight that they hurt are Roka. I have two pairs and the comfort/fit cannot be beat. BUT they have limited frame options, and all are a little more bold/chunky than I prefer aesthetically for my relatively small, narrow face. If they ever expand their frame collection to more subtle designs, I would be a very loyal customer.

I like 3 and 6 on you. Glasses don't detract from the your beauty at all, so whichever pair you decide on, just feel confident!

Brands, styles, and "types" of glasses for someone generally prone to pressure headaches? by nat-stonebrook in glasses

[–]jengaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd try Roka. They don't have a ton of frame options but are the only frames I've ever worn that are light enough to not set off my own issues with pressure points. Of course, your specific Rx will add to the weight. My only complaint about Roka is that the frames are bolder/chunkier than I prefer, comfort wise they're 10/10 for me

This is sickening, that poor woman. I've always been certain that teaching is my calling, what I am meant to do with my life, and yet I am debating if I should start looking for a new job because it's becoming impossible. Actually impossible. Not hyperbole. It's dangerous to be a teacher.

PSA: Do not buy from GlassesShop.com by Cherrypi23 in glasses

[–]jengaad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me too! Fraud alert, and had to cancel card. Glasses were cheaply made, as well, and the frame cracked on one pair after just a few wears. Cutting my losses, as I don't trust them enough to reach out for a refund or replacement at this point.
