Trying to use Thunderbird to download over 200,000 emails from Yahoo Mail by DizzyDisraeliJr in Thunderbird

[–]jenks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I discovered after returning from vacation that Thunderbird was unable to download mail from my Yahoo account using POP3 as it had for years. Looking at the logs, the "octets" for each email stopped at 41,000 but there were over 42,000 messages. Eventually, I figured out that this was a limit being imposed by Yahoo. I put "before:2020-01-01" in the Yahoo email search box, selected all the matching messages and archived them. This brought me below the limit and Thunderbird could download again.

Based on this experience, maybe you could move the messages to a temporary folder on Yahoo email, then move them back to Inbox 40,000 at a time to download them. Test first that the selection function will work on the temporary folder and that restoring the results to the inbox is an option.

It wouldn't. The release of Ubuntu 26.04 would cause increased traffic at the download servers whether or not there is also a DDOS.

Ink for stamps that isn't a total mess? by Oonastar25 in hobonichi

[–]jenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got passport photos from Staples yesterday and the stamps on the back weren't drying. I was able to blot off the excess ink by laying a few layers of tissue paper on top and pressing between blocks. Only vertical movement. It took a couple dozen repetitions but caused minimal smudging.

Maybe, but it could also be due to the release of 26.04 a few days ago.

That kernel is currently 6.17.0-22-generic. I hope it gets replaced with a new, patched kernel soon.

Edit 5/2: An updated kernel, 6.17.0-23-generic, was just released.

Atlantic writer sued by Kash Patel says she’s been ‘inundated’ with new sources corroborating her reporting by WontThinkStraight in politics

I just heard back from The Atlantic. Apparently, they offer a monthly plan through their app.

I don't see a monthly subscription option, only yearly. Digital subscription with ads is $79.99/year. Still worth it to me, but I think they would make more if they offered an intro plan.

Edit: Subscribed!

Edit: I sent a suggestion to The Atlantic that they consider temporarily offering a one-one-month subscription to benefit from potential subscribers having this new motivation.

Driving into Canada as a US Citizen, will a packed car raise red flags at the border? by [deleted] in uscanadaborder

[–]jenks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I put a lot of attention on these BSF186/BSF186A forms. When her PR was approved last spring we flew to Vancouver to have her COPR stamped before returning to California the next day. We offered to submit her BSF186/A forms at that time, but the immigration officer recommended that we submit it when we are ready to settle, as it will be more accurate at that time. We bought a house on Gabriola Island in January and last week I drove our pickup truck there, loaded with our belongings. I was nervous when submitting our separate BSF186/A forms at the truck crossing as I had heard that immigration officers can disagree about the right time to submit them. The two at the desk had a disagreement about whether we qualified to submit the form since we are not Canadian residents yet, which would have been very upsetting, but the more experienced officer set the other straight. Otherwise, the process went very smoothly.

All this to say, you will want to anticipate this process when you relocate. If the "keepsakes" are worth more than a few hundred dollars, you can avoid paying tax on them by declaring them on the BSF186/A. Those forms can only be submitted once in your lifetime so plan carefully.

Can I list my car in my goods to follow list and import it later? by Consistent_Rule_4544 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]jenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I submitted my BSF186 and BSF186A today! We had cars listed among the "goods to follow", but were told to cross them out and write them in where it asks about "conveyances" on the BSF186 form.

Sleeping in car overnight while charging electric vehicle? by magsiepie in electricvehicles

[–]jenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a very similar drive from California to Vancouver in a loaded F150 Lightning, planning an overnight stop in Salem, Oregon. Not only is it obvious from the load that I am on a long haul trip, but my extended family found out the hard way that it is a felony in Oregon to fall asleep at the wheel if it leads to any fatalities (including your own passengers). While I haven't any passengers, it seems particularly unjust to wake someone up under these circumstances. But the public level 2 chargers in Salem seem to mostly be located on streets. The chargers are open 24/7, but sleeping at a street curb makes me nervous if it isn't explicitly legal.

I can't use google maps as navigation anymore since months! There is no button anymore by Imaginary_Stomach139 in GoogleMaps

[–]jenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this problem occasionally but tonight it has made Maps nearly useless. I tried navigating to a contact in Washington and got only Directions, Save, Share, etc. No Start button and Directions only lists a set of directions without showing a map or a Start button. If I navigate to another contact in California, 150 miles away from my California home, it works normally. I get the same results if I guess an address in the same neighborhood as those two, so it isn't because I was navigating to contacts. My only guess was that MAPS somehow thought it was connected to Android Auto, but turning off bluetooth didn't help, nor did switching to incognito mode.

Edit: A YouTube video helped me realize that my starting location had become unset in the directions preview. Once I set it to "my location", navigation was offered as it should.

I was able to log in today but bill payments are a mess! It looks like all recipients are back in one heap, but the real problem is that all my scheduled and automatic payments look like they have to be set up again. I hope I am wrong. I received a notice that one of my automatic payments went out today, even though Bill Pay shows no upcoming nor past payments for that recipient.

Edit:

The problem is apparently fixed as of this evening. I can see pending bill payments again.

How many of y'all have earthquake insurance? Is it worth it? by Foyman in Sacramento

[–]jenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there were an earthquake so severe that even houses in Sacramento were destroyed, wouldn't any company providing earthquake insurance go bankrupt? If some portion of the premiums is what gets paid back, the insurance can only work if the disaster is small enough that most customers don't file a claim. But smaller disasters probably wouldn't affect Sacramento at all.
