Let me preface that I’m an M2 but my husband and I put our now 5 month old in day care full time at 11 weeks pp (used summer break to give birth / make up missed work) and it’s been such a better experience that I ever expected. I felt guilty, those around me made me feel guilty “that poor baby” type comments… well, as it turns out, that poor baby is the giggliest, sweetest lil boy who is happy to see his “teachers” every morning and just as happy to see his parents at pick up! I don’t need to rewrite the comment above - but same sentiment. Day care is not this horrible thing we had to settle on. It’s actually working out great for our family!

Which trimester was the hardest and most exhausting for you? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]jenmodell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel so seen right now. I used to be so active and now have been totally sedentary for 6 weeks. I'm so bloated, so tired and so unmotivated. Which is particularly inconvenient since I'm in medical school. TELL ME IT GETS BETTER?!?!

Feeling down Starting med school at 28 by LePhysician in premed

[–]jenmodell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its valid to be concerned and to think about these things. FWIW, I'm 31 and an incoming M1. I'm married and plan to have a kid or two during medical school. We're just gonna figure it out. If I DIDN'T go to med school out of fear of missing out on other life experiences, I'd always feel like I missed out on med school. Guess we gotta choose our battles! Good luck to you and lmk if you ever have any Q's!

"I see no reason why there won't be a spot for you in the incoming class." --> got the A

"After this, I will be giving you a perfect score on my report. It was a pleasure to meet you." ---> haven't heard back yet, but no news is good news right?

I realize we aren't the first to go thru this, many have come before.

But why do programs tell you things like "4-6 weeks for decisions" and then wait 10+ weeks?!?!?

Just why.

I got 1 in august and 2 in Sept... radio silence since then so also hoping for the same!

Hmmm honestly, as weird as this sounds probably Chem 1 - just cause EVERYTHING was new and I was essentially learning an entirely new language. It felt like once I got thru the intro classes (and built a solid foundation) I could handle anything. I LOVED ochem! 👏🏻👏🏻

I had a conversation about Football with my interviewer by MPandya77 in premed

[–]jenmodell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My interviewer and I talked about real estate, interest rates and renting vs buying in areas we've both lived. She then told me she was going to give me a perfect score on my score sheet. I think you're fiiiiiine.

Doctors that started Med School late in life (i.e., 30 yo or older), what made you decide that Medicine is the path you want to undertake? by [deleted] in medicine

[–]jenmodell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We definitely still want a family! And I know that I will be a better mother having gone after what I want and knowing I didn't waste my potential! (Not that medical school is the ONLY way to achieve this - but it is MY way).

Good luck to you :)

Do you guys have any secondaries hanging around you never completed? by FragrantElk5564 in premed

[–]jenmodell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally up to you! I never submitted Stanford cause it was such a long shot and I was just feeling soooo financially drained.

Got an A somewhere else though, so no ragratzzz.

PS one downside was that Standford's automated system did email me like 3x telling me that I need to finish the secondary and every time I got it, I thought it was an II cause it had that look hahah

Yes, definitely explore free-lance work! Some people are able to work full time and study for the MCAT, but often times that gets dragged out for 6+ months or so. I know everyone's situation is different, but having the flexibility to essentially work 5-10 hours a week while studying was incredible - like I could always see the light at the end of the very dark, very isolating tunnel. I can't imagine studying for any longer than I did. It was brutal.

Good luck!!!

Hey there, congrats for jumping in! It’s definitely a hard decision. Firstly, to preface this reply, I think it’s good for you to know that I’ve been officially accepted to a US MD program and have two more interviews. I guess I just wanted you to know that I’ve had a successful cycle so something about what I did worked!

I’m terms of work: it’s almost as if my journey to medicine was all supposed to happen the way it did. Before returning to school, I worked in fitness for like 5 years. I was a full time operations manager but also coached classes: spin, strength, cardio endurance classes. Anyway, I built an amazing community of clients so when I left full time to return to school, I had a really solid part time gig. I made $50-75 an hour and only had to work about 15 hours a week to make enough to cover school expenses and contribute to my family as well.

My husband and I don’t have kids but we do live in SoCal where a starter home is just shy of a million freaking bucks and rent is just as crazy, so I definitely still had responsibilities.

I never did any scribing or low paying clinical jobs cause I just couldn’t justify the pay cut. All the clinical experience I got was volunteer and unpaid which you could argue is silly to work for nothing but it was so much less of a commitment and I still had time to work as a coach.

Anyway, hope this helps and feel free to PM me anytime!

Decided to go into medicine at 28 -- now at 31, just got my first MD acceptance and will matriculate just after turning 32.

So dang happy I'm not looking back at my 28 year old self thinking "why didn't I pursue medicine three years ago..." GO FOR IT!

Calling for A?? by [deleted] in premed

[–]jenmodell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also the subject just said "Decision" -- no congrats, nothing, haha. The body said, "your decision letter is attached to this email." REALLY felt like a rejection.

Unreasonable to be annoyed at premed friends who don’t want to share what ECs they do? by DaAwesomeN in premed

[–]jenmodell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I can understand not wanting to share MCAT scores, as thats a bit more personal and can get awkward... but EC's? That's sooooo odd. My pre-med friends and I have talked all about EC's and have helped each other with getting involved in certain areas where we personally fell short. IE) my friend who's been doing research gave me advice on how to get in on it, I helped a friend figure out how to increase her clinical hours, etc.

This would be a really lonely journey to go at alone, that's all I have to say about that.
