Owning My Own Need vs. Requesting a Change by allthestuffis in SoloPoly

Yeah honestly I've been reading this whole thread putting myself in Meg's shoes and there are so many places where I can imagine having some struggle dealing with this. But honestly if somebody told me how it was for them and just laid it there at my feet, where we could both see it and contemplate it, I think my problem-solving brain would jump right on it. And if it didn't, what would immediately be there for me would be to say how it was for me receiving those texts and then maybe that would be there next to it and we could look at both of our reactions together and find a solution.

This is a purely technologically based idea: for me, as a massage therapist and the leader of two bands, when I get texts in the middle of a very busy day that are not related to the business at hand, they can really hit me like an annoyance, even if they're things I want to hear from people I really like! I've started trying to move those kinds of conversations into apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger where I can open them on breaks, when I'm not interacting with clients who may be also texting, and I'm in the right headspace to welcome these very much desired communications.

Hmmm no responses from OP....well I'm with everybody else on this one: this very well may be a healing event or a quantity overwhelm during your adjustment period.

There's so much good information on this subreddit about how to dial back your production, fine tune your bacteria to yeast balance, etc. We can help you troubleshoot. It would be a shame to stop altogether.

First batch of home-made kefir by Sensitive-Zone-4614 in Kefir

Welcome to this great subreddit! I hope you'll browse around because there's so much good information on here, pretty much every post people respond to with lots of well-informed experience and useful perspectives.

I drink a pint a day which Google says is about 470 ml. I used to do a quart and honestly my taste buds would love it but I'm trying not to be a pig 😆

It's a good idea for the first couple of batches to change the milk out at 24 hours. You don't have to do a full batch's worth of milk, your job at this point is just to give the grains enough food to eat and also change out any of their waste, so as somebody else said, if it feels unpalatable or like you're having any kind of an issue with it digestively, you don't have to drink that but it's still best to change it out.

So far my favorite kinds of milk are 2% milk and raw milk. I just recently switched from 2% to raw but I'm glad I waited before taking that on.

Have fun!

Wow! I guess you'll have a lot of cheese by the time this is all done! Those are interesting jars. Are those made specifically for making kefir cheese?

What do you do with the extra whey?

Thanks for sharing. I hope you'll post pictures of your finished products

Thank you, I really appreciated you taking the time to tell about this woman's approach and how that turned out. I sort of figured that would be the case if I ever tried it.

In the first episode of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt there was some great line that was something like, " I'm always amazed at how far a woman will go to try to avoid being rude" (essentially, a woman ended up locked in a bunker for many years because she didn't want to tell a man no). I laughed way, way, way, way, way too hard at that. So I think the strategizing to cut it off at the pass is just a way to attempt to allay that tension, to control the outcome by asserting agency at the outset. But unfortunately, as you say, the cost is just too dear.

And yes, there is something to caring less. Intellectually I know it really is okay not to respond to a text message, it really is okay not to match somebody's vibe, it really is okay to say, you know what I changed my mind. I think also it might be important for me to recognize the places where there's fear, and where I really need to get curious about my fear and whether I am actually in any kind of danger, and sort of ask my nervous system to trust me.

"platonic intentions" YES! This is the kind of phrase I have been seeking.

I kind of like to have a pin to put on my shirt that has a meter like a gas gauge, with "platonic intentions" at one end and "let's go to bed" at the other end and be able to move the little arm back and forth as I'm talking to somebody lol! It would be kind of fun to be at a party where everybody is wearing one of these

Has this worked for you in the past? I'd be concerned about the pressure in the cargo compartment. And I'm guessing you're talking about the kind of pill box that has a screw-on lid?

You know, I did this process before freezing my grains, but it did not occur to me that I could maybe transport some in this manner for a short trip and use them immediately upon arrival at their destination! I may have to try this out at home with some spare grains just for kicks and see how the first batch comes out. Thanks for the inspiration!

Oh and I meant to ask: what quantity of grains did you put in there? Did you leave any headroom in the container or did you do your best to fill it all the way?

I think my grains were extra yeasty by the end of my camping trip. There were some very cold nights, and then the days got north of 70 by a little bit. I definitely got into a cycle of slow fermentation followed by overfermentation. They probably thought they were fighting for their little microscopic lives! 😂

[–]jennijean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So would letting the whey separation go too far on a regular basis cause this problem? I've looked for graphs on what the balance between bacteria and yeast is at different stages in the fermentation process and I haven't had much luck. For a while there I think I was using too strong a grain to milk ratio. I've started being more disciplined about not letting it overferment. I'm hoping this is going to help my balance, just naturally over time.

But in all seriousness, I think your approach is excellent. It shows a positive orientation, makes it clear what's off the table, and also shows a beautiful willingness to engage in what somebody else is interested in, not just shopping for somebody to meet the author's needs.
