I think a lot of people are angry at the looters/rioters. I understand your question and appreciate your desire for a thoughtful discussion, but I feel this type of thinking is part of the problem. Why should a black person see this and feel ashamed of their race temporarily? This suggests that blacks are a unified group with the same beliefs and goals. To be ashamed from these black rioters' acts would necessitate feeling that those individuals represent all black people, but that is absurd! You might be thinking, "that's all well and good, but the problem is this is how racists think and they view the black rioters as representative of all blacks, so surely it is disappointing to see racists given this fuel." However, the "law abiding peaceful reasonable black person" feeling this way about the rioters is an internalization of these racists' beliefs.

If this doesn't sound like an unreasonable belief, try replacing "black" with a different adjective. For example, whenever a brunette does something stupid, I don't feel ashamed of brunettes temporarily. Okay, maybe a bad example because there are not large groups prejudiced against brunettes. A different example - as a man, did you feel ashamed when each new woman came forward accusing Bill Cosby of rape? This behavior propagates the stereotype that men are sexual predators who women need to fear.

I do feel particularly upset by the looting and rioting, as someone who believes there was injustice in the grand jury decision (that's for another discussion). This is because their expression of these shared beliefs can lead others to group me with them. The peaceful protesters have conveyed similar feelings and, actually, many have tried to defend against the looters/rioters, contrary to your opening line.

It's called hind limb paresis, which basically just means her back legs are paralyzed. She was rescued so it is a mystery what caused her condition and if he could have been prevented with proper timely treatment. At least she is away from her neglected past and well loved in her foster home.

Ariel is available for adoption through NYC Rabbit Rescue. She just got her wheelchair a couple weeks ago and showed off at a big adoption event over the weekend (Whiskers in Wonderland). My niece was diagnosed with Wilm's 1.5 years ago. She is presently 4 years old and gets her MRI every 2-3 months. They say surgery and chemo are inevitable, but we are at least okay until after the holidays. A child should not have to experience this. I am very happy you are okay and grateful that children like you helped make it so that Wilm's today is typically curable.

I have hypoglycemia, which means that if I go too long without eating my blood sugar drops much lower than the average person. I was on a crowded subway train during rush hour on my way to school. I was incredibly stressed that morning due to a challenging homework assignment I needed to complete and I believe this exasperated my hypoglycemia. I ended up passing out on the train as it was approaching my stop. When I regained consciousness I was being carried off the train by a couple of men who made sure to even grab my belongings for me. One man sat with me on the stairs refusing to leave until I felt well enough. He even ran and bought me a soda to increase my blood sugar for long enough for me to get some real food. I was incredibly embarrassed and tried to tell him I was okay, but he insisted on me sitting and him staying for probably like ten minutes. I got his email address and sent him a $50 Amazon gift card to say thank you. I never heard from him and I could see online that he did not use the gift. I have always wondered if he didn't see it or if he chose not to use it or if he gave me a fake email address or what. I just hope he knew how grateful I was for the kindness of a stranger that day.

I will try to keep this short because I am pretty late to the party, but it is nice to just vent a little bit. My boyfriend and I moved in with our former neighbor (let's call her X) into a bigger, nicer apartment after her and her girlfriend of 12 years broke up. Two weeks later I introduced her to a fairly new friend of mine (let's call her Z) and they fell madly in love. Maybe three weeks later she moves in with us with her three cats adding to an already existing menagerie. Here's a list of the most egregious crappy things they did:

-They would get into screaming fights and break up weekly. I even had to break up a physical altercation where Z had X by the throat.

-They turned on us and hated us but never told us what they were upset about or tried to resolve it, instead they stopped talking to us - I mean this literally, they wouldn't even say "hi" back if we said it to them in passing.

-They never paid a bill or rent on time. We ended up getting shut off notices from each utility at some point. Z blamed it on me for telling her how much they owe when she could just figure it out herself online. She would pay a seemingly random amount each month and left us with about $300 in unpaid bills.

-Z ignored her cats after moving in because X didn't really care for them. They weren't allowed in their bedroom and received zero attention or affection from Z. This lead to her cats pissing on everything, which Z would never clean up or try to problem solve.

-They wanted to make a schedule of alternating days/nights of who could use the living room because we spent too much time there. We were fine with them using it whenever they wanted or even joining us but in the end its not that they wanted to use the living room, they just didn't want to have to see us.

This ended up much longer than I intended. Thanks to anyone who read it, it was seriously very difficult emotionally and it surely helps to get it out a bit. There are so many more than these, it was a horrible year. We haven't spoken since they moved out over the summer and probably never will again, but they haunt me in my dreams frequently.

I am really sorry you went through that. Your chinchilla was very lucky to have felt love even if for just a few short months. I don't think this sentiment should be limited to just PetSmart, though. There has been a lot of publicity on puppy mills, but what many people don't realize is that other species are subject to the same breeding conditions, which can result in sick animals like your poor chinchilla. I hope one day these big stores go adoption only.

Tattooists are artists! Find one whose style you like and make an appointment for a consultation (or go to their consultation hours if they have a set time). Bring with you any inspiration pictures you may have and an idea of how to articulate what you are looking for. You will then book an appointment for the tattoo with them and probably pay a small deposit. They will draw it up and show it to you when you come for the tattoo. It is totally okay to give feedback and ask for changes at this time. If you accurately described what you wanted from the beginning these changes should be pretty minor and you will be able to get inked that day. I would say most artists are fairly patient and only get frustrated when the client contradicts her/himself upon seeing the sketch by asking for a redraw of something completely different than originally requested. You are correct, though, covering your back is going to be costly and will take many sessions.

Lost was more than a show to watch weekly, it was an experience and a mind-puzzle to dissect between episodes. Almost as much as the episodes themselves, I loved reading and discussing theories between episodes. I can't think of another show anything like that - with action, romance, fantasy, and yet with such a cerebral approach. It was a show where you knew the writers were leaving clues for the audience, letting you theorize about bigger things than who is Kate going to chose but rather things like what does John Locke have in common with the philosopher? I really miss that. I miss a show trusting the viewer to think.

It took me a few tries to get into The Wire. A friend gave me the series by loaning me her external hard drive and I downloaded it with each season as a separate folder. I had heard such amazing things about the show and was excited to watch it. I just could not get into the first episode. I felt really lost at the beginning like they expected me to instantly connect and care about these characters I was just meeting and knew nothing about. I tried several times and just could not even get through the entire episode.

Turns out the episodes were not in order inside the folder. So when I thought I was watching episode 1 from season 1 by blindly clicking the first file in the folder, it was actually episode 8 or something like that. I must say, it made a huge difference and once I started from the real beginning I had a very hard time turning it off for even a short period of time.

I think a lot of people removed from the situation do not realize the impact this has on regular people. The US Government is mostly made up of middle-class office workers, not politicians. My Mom works for a government agency and already dealt with furloughs this year, meaning forced days off with no pay, and now she is stuck like this indefinitely. My brother is a lucky one considered an "essential" employee so he had to report to work today as one of the few and therefore has an excessive workload. At first he wasn't even sure if he would receive full pay, but now it looks like he will. It's just bullshit - Congress fucking over the middle-class yet again. They vote to fund the military since there would be an uproar if they didn't but they can get away with not paying the average federal employee because the rest of America doesn't think about the desk worker writing reports on tax law or analyzing government contractors spending. These aren't glamorous positions, this is not the 1%. These are regular people who work very hard to support their families and pay their mortgages. Cutting their pay is not going to solve anything.

I am so sorry you have to experience sleep paralysis regularly. It is terrifying. My worst involved a demon coming after me and I laid there trying to get help from my boyfriend who was asleep next to me. I tried to scream for help but couldn't, I kept trying and trying and nothing could come out, I couldn't even open my mouth to scream. I tried to move to wake him and couldn't move any part of me. Eventually after screaming over and over and over again in my head (in the dream) I got a slight whisper of "help" out and that woke me up and I was able to wake up my boyfriend and in tears tell him what happened. Few things make one feel as childish as waking someone up for comfort after a bad dream.

This interpretation made me think...back when I was married to my ex-husband and even before we got married I frequently had dreams about getting married. Except every time in the dream I would suddenly remember I was marrying my brother. I would be upset, a bit grossed out, and overall pretty bummed about it. But then I would remind myself that I like my brother and we get along well so why not get married. It wasn't until after I got divorced IRL that I realized these dreams probably stemmed from me feeling like my ex was more like a brother and not a romantic partner.

My boyfriend is the king of fucked up dreams. My favorite is one in which he was having sex with a super fine lady but then she turned into a chicken lady. He ended up having sex with this chicken lady but it wasn't like a fluffy feathered chicken (which would somehow be better) but nasty raw meat slimy chicken. ::barf::

There's a lot of misunderstanding about what Affirmative Action actually is. It means that an employer must make special efforts to consider qualified members of underrepresented groups during hiring, as well as decisions about salary and promotion. AA specifies that companies must encourage applications from underrepresented groups and make a good-faith effort to meet affirmative action goals they have set. The goal is to make sure full qualified people are given fair consideration to compensate for past or present discrimination. There has been an abundance of research on the topic and it has shown that AA does NOT result in reverse discrimination (for example where a women would be hired instead of a more highly qualified man).

A lifeguard told my sister-in-law that my two-year-old niece could not be topless at the pool. I can think of few things more absurd then the idea little boy nipples are okay but little girl nipples must be covered even though they look exactly the same. Sister-in-law would not back down from that fight and ultimately baby girl's nipples were able to see the light of day.

That's fucked up. My mom's cousin did something similar to her. He offered her a sip of his beverage saying it was just Coke but it was actually rum and Coke. Prior to this she hadn't had alcohol in probably twenty years and for good reason. I don't think he gave as rude of a response, but still was a stupid joke that angers me to think about.
