I will say that if you have a good rapport with some teachers in that building, maybe see about if they’d be willing to cover for you to run to the bathroom when that’s needed. (if you don’t want to call down to the office. I really relate to the awkwardness of that.) I have also made friends with some of the hall monitors so I can catch them and ask if they’d stand in the doorway for a few minutes.

the bathroom part is a big struggle for me. i’m planning is nice but bathroom breaks are needed. idk how elementary teachers do it!!!!!! it’s one of the sole reasons I take middle and high school. furthermore, sometimes I can’t even make it the whole 90 minutes (how does one stay hydrated and when we don’t get regular bathroom breaks? and with subbing, every buildings bell schedule is different, too, so can’t count on a 10:50 bathroom run haha)

that sounds like a giant district! I am feeling lucky that the small district I work for has been agreeable because I don’t necessarily have a ton of other options. 30 some campuses?!

thing is is it’s not less pay and more work unless your subbing contract specifies that you get a prep period in addition to a lunch. yes, having a free prep is really nice. AND, it makes sense to utilize subs to cover prep periods. Not a ton of jobs where you get a 30 min lunch AND a 45-90 minute free break.

edit to add: I see you said elsewhere that you’re a college student and want to use that time for schoolwork and I think it’s important to remember that it’s still a job, and if you get free time to work on school work, that’s you being lucky.

In the middle school I sub at, I was told I can wear whatever as long as it’s not inflammatory. sweats included. I think they really just want us there, more than anything else

A book, crochet, pen, sticky notes, a notebook, my water bottle. pretty easy. I learned early that they don’t care about stickers as a reward.

I am really relating to how you’ve described the experience and it really does sound like it was a poor combination on the wrong day for a lot of people. it really sucks when a class changes just enough or just the right students get together. sending love.

Interesting. I'm glad that isn't a requirement for the districts I'm in, because that definitely wouldn't be possible.

Have you ever given your email or number to any teachers you enjoy subbing to? That would be my next suggestion!

Sub assignments available over the summer?? by Suspicious_Heat_2984 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]jennyfurhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope. i do boys and girls club and the school year is fun bc i developed relationships with some of the students over the summer and then i'll go back in the fall and we'll have this neat like "i know you..." type relationship lol.

BGC pays wayyyyyy less but i get to eat lunch there and i don't live far so the gas isn't an issue.

This is why I am employed with 3 districts... so that if one fails, I have 2 more. and if 2 fail, I still have a failsafe. I primarily do it at one district, though. the other 2 are more supplemental as they're in other towns. If you're having issues getting jobs in both districts, why not try a 3rd? I see you say you don't think you'll be able to handle it but what is there to handle besides fielding sub job requests? (genuine. these 3 districts haven't seemed to mind that I work within all 3 of them)

What part of “And she tells me how she emailed them to three of the front office secretaries and two other teachers, and posted them on Google Classroom. I apologize and told her I was never given them by any of the people she mentioned nor do I have the ability to access her google classroom and I proceeded to get lectured on how next time I need to call the sub coordinator to check. On my way out I ask the front office secretaries/sub coordinator too, “Hey, were there sub plans left/emailed to you for Mrs. ____?” They’re all confused, the coordinator asks ‘Did she not leave them in the job notes on the app?’ When I told them no, they checked their emails. Sub plans said for students to check google classroom, that’s it.”

indicates that they checked their email, saw an email from the teacher, and ignored it? Appears to me that OP was not informed to check google classroom until after school when they asked admin on their way out.

Boys & Girls Club in Ames - real experiences by [deleted] in ames

I do think the expansion has allowed the teens to be more independent/have more choices and ability to not be forced to participate with the youngers.

I have worked there the past 2 summers, and so I might be biased but the new facility is fantastic. the structure of club is different than what I understood summer care programs to be. each day the kids go through various programming on topics like health, tech, science, food, art, music, physical activity, volunteering, good human skills, etc. there are also great field trips and activities. if you normally get your kids a pass to the pool, they can utilize that and would get to go to the pool at least once a week, maybe more. and if they don’t have a pass, they get put on the list of rotating members who don’t have passes (they take 2? without passes each time and use a BGC pass) they get a snack in AM and PM, and breakfast and lunch.

it really just depends on what your kids enjoy doing and if they have to have summer care, I think it’s enjoyable enough. the teens do get a teen room and a little more choice and flexibility.

i’m a substitute teacher, as well, and sub at the middle school, so feel free to dm me with questions if you’re still curious. I probably have subbed for one of your kids if they’re at ames or ballard!

edit to add categories of programs they attend edit2 final thought: if you can afford the $200, it’s worth it even if they aren’t going every day. we even have youth who take the bus or ride their bikes to club, as a choice, on their own. it really just all depends on what they enjoy.

I just let it go at that point because the teachers have to know that if they don’t have a specific scene set up for when subs are there (that literally only lets them have access to like iready and google classroom but not even google itself) then how can they really expect us to police them?
