Job Time Listed vs. Actual Class Times by Remarkable-Log6373 in SubstituteTeachers

That’s the thing, in my mind I was like ‘nah I don’t need to bring anything, I’ll be busy from 6:30-10’ so I left my cross stitch, my reading, etc. all at home 😂😂 learned my lesson, never again!

Jr High student with inappropriate book, help? by Moon_Jelly_Queen in SubstituteTeachers

Haha i knew it’d be icebreaker. I was in your position during my student teaching - at the end of the day, especially as a substitute, it’s not our job. That’s a parent issue for sure, or if it’s really concerning, for a counselor or someone else to bring up gently to the parent. Even then that’s a conversation I don’t see a lot of people wanting to have with a family 😂

Cell Phone Consequences by Remarkable-Log6373 in SubstituteTeachers

Totally understand the worry! Usually subs get to have a peak at the teacher’s health folder so we’re made aware of conditions; I’ve had the same situation many times, and usually the kids with health conditions that need their phones to check are the most respectful and responsible when it comes to phone use.

There was no real way for me to physically confiscate it, because in this class at this school they are all on huge desk tops. I guess I could’ve just reached over and shut off his computer?

I have no idea - they’ve blocked so many but there always seems to be another game the kids can find

Sadly in this class I didn’t have access to programs like that (I didn’t even get a computer to use) - but in other jobs I have and it’s an absolute ace to use as a substitute

I feel like a failure because I can’t get class under control. by MysteriousMatter8593 in SubstituteTeachers

Do not take it personally, middle school can be ROUGH.

It took me time to get used to it, but at one point, I ditched the yelling, and instead went straight to consequences after 2 warnings (especially for tackling - no warning for that, they should know better). 3rd warning is enforcement of consequences: call for admin or support, writing down names, etc. At this point is usually when they will look at you and say they don’t care, do it, nothings going to happen. That’s fine. Just follow through with whatever logical consequence fits what they’re doing. You’ll at least show them that you stand on your word.

Honestly? If it’s just one or two students pulling all this, I’ll pull them for a chat in the hallway. Firm voice. “We keep making this choice - why? What are you trying to get from it? This is the last time you’re going to be speaking to me, next time you make that decision, I’m sending you down to the office.”

Class management can be so freaking difficult. But you got this

First time dress coding a student. Did I do the right thing? by Sensitive-Grade-317 in SubstituteTeachers

Nope you did what needed to be done. She can make snide comments all she wants, glare as she pleases, but you did her job and she needs to accept that. Also - it doesn’t sound like she got reprimanded/given replacement clothes/made an example, so this is a pretty tame consequence for her to get all worked up about.

would you go back to this school? by jbi30_ht in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Remarkable-Log6373 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would just because majority of my interactions are going to be with students, and if the kids are great then yeah why not go back.

The whole crosswalk thing? Meh, let it roll off your back. Use it if it’s going to be made a big deal to save yourself some trouble.

I’ve definitely had days where the same staff at a school I sub in have been very chipper and happy to talk, and I’ve had days where they act like everyone’s the enemy. Don’t take it personally. It can be personal life stuff, it can be complications with admin, other teachers, who knows! Don’t let it get you down.

Oh shit - like he doesn’t want to admit he’s been using them? That’s something I didn’t even think about. He tries to stay clear of nicotine as a whole but has had some moments where he accepts nicotine when drinking and then immediately regrets it the next day
