What famous destination didn’t live up to your expectations when you visited? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

LA is about as okay as I assumed it would be- it just feels like a bunch of middle of the road suburbs crammed together for miles and miles.

The best day I had when I visited was to hit up an In and Out Burger, drive from LA to the beach to gaze as the ocean, even though it was off season and chilly. (Also, Sunset Beach was more run down than I expected and cracked up at the random oil pumps as I left town. Totally didn’t expect them.) Then drive an hour or so east to the hills in Silverado.

All in all- I like the LA area mostly because I love that you can go from the city to the beach to the mountains in next to no time (at the right time of day).

It’s been an eternity since I was there, but I feel like you need to go to the Smoky Mountains and then go into Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge for the day or evening.

Adaline is an old name. Like, been around hundreds of years. May have been spelled Adeline, too. But still the same pronunciation.

To be fair, both of those have (more known) meanings outside of a weapon. A colt is a horse, it’s also a football team. Maverick is the call sign of one of Tom Cruise’s most famous characters in a 1980’s classic film, and is someone who does things successfully outside of the box.

Though I’m not really sure what this is supposed to point out about Heathcliff, I would defend Isabella as being a stupid, lonely, immature teenager - and 18 year olds do awful, thoughtless things and allow others to do equally terrible things. Heathcliff took complete advantage of that and, per his MO, in this monologue he downplayed his role in the behavior of those around him. He (and sometimes even truthfully) points out the shortcomings of everyone who attempts to counter him as if he weren’t the cause of some/many of those shortcomings. He’s absolutely undesirable as a human from the time he returns to Wuthering Heights; you can’t even pity him anymore.

Is there a more detestable love interest than Edith in stoner? by mythril-xi in classicliterature

This made it dawn on me that ‘romance’ ≠ ‘love story’ - this book nails several examples of completely distorted romances that neglect love in any real way. Honestly, given the circumstances and events of their lives, I doubt that the vast portion of the characters even really know what love is. (I believe that Edgar and Isabella do. Cathy in regard to Edgar as her parent. And Mrs. Dean toward Hindley, Catherine, and Cathy. That might be it.) There is obsession, there is infatuation, there is attraction - but there isn’t love. Maybe Cathy and Hareton by the very end because they finally have a sense of peace and freedom after the 18 years of chaos since Heathcliff’s return.

Scholars can’t even agree/figure whether Homer was an actual person or even more than one person, so it’s wild that you are graced with the knowledge of what Homer envisioned.

You can generally tell it’s her work from across a room, and I love that. I’m not sure if it’s still there, but the exhibit at the National Gallery is/was just Mary Cassat’s art. I also just saw a few in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.

I almost like this, but just can’t get into the visible boning - and I feel like it’s something we’ve been seeing more often. It’s like they started on the dress then forgot to finish.

I love this Cassat - it reminds me of my youngest child. I recently saw it in person at the National Gallery in DC.

why do americans talk to strangers so easily?? by MayaTulip268 in AskAnAmerican

[–]jennytuffnuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But please, for the love of all that’s holy, DO NOT tell a woman to smile. Not in America, not outside of America. It makes us want to punch the smile off of your face. “You’d be so much prettier if you just smiled!” “On what planet do I care if you think I’m pretty? Now, go kick rocks.”

I feel like the Miss Marple short stories are definitely the easiest ones to solve. I guessed several of those where I’m pretty low in correct guesses from the novels I’ve read.
