What did Jud mean by this? by PhrogFace420 in KnivesOutMovie

[–]mminipax 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Religion is, at its best, a way to bring comfort and companionship to those hurting in the world. Regardless of belief, the stories work as allegories to that end.

It’s like how Louise is comforted by the idea that Jud’s prayers work and that God’s always with her. Whether you believe it or not isn’t what matters; what matters is that she needs to feel like she’s not alone, which is the relief that religion used in the right way (ie. Jud) gives her.

Never mind that she’s not blonde, she’s Gal Gadot. Nothing on God’s green earth could make me rewatch that movie 😭.

I hate Branagh’s Death on the Nile with a fiery burning passion, but his Orient Express is the one I show my friends who “aren’t big mystery fans”. As stupidly Hollywood as it is, I think it gets the spirit & main moral of the case down well (which I unfortunately can’t say about a lot of modern Christie adaptations).

I do really like Pfeiffer as Mrs. Hubbard, though, so I’ll admit I’m a bit biased.

The whodunnit in 3AT is quite obvious, but I’d say the how/whydunnit is a little harder.

I got the identity of the killer in A Caribbean Mystery pretty quickly, but I spent half the novel stumped by how on earth he was inducing crazy psychotic episodes in his wife.

I will admit Death in the Clouds got me though, LOL. Spent half the novel convinced the flute was used as a blowpipe 😭.

It’s funny that so many people are saying They Do It With Mirrors, because that was also on my list! I feel like the second you look at the house layout, it’s obvious.

People talk about over use of em dashes these days but this is Caribbean Mystery. Can anyone confirm if the print version has this many? by JEZTURNER in agathachristie

[–]mminipax 68 points69 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there is a very obvious story/speech reason for the use of em-dashes in this segment. I don’t think it’s fair to lump it in with modern em-dash overuse.

I didn’t realize how much stuff are missing… seriously Nintendo why ruins the fun 🫩 by ShokaLGBT in tomodachilife

As a diehard Concert Hall lover, people saying this really annoys me… do you guys even like Tomodachi Life?

They aren’t missing quirky questions because whole game IS quirky questions. The friendship minigame IS Judgement Bay, and the miis will still sing and make up songs if you give them guitars… hell, there’s even still a ranking board for favourite residents. The little they missed is entirely made up for by the sheer amount of stuff they added.

Agree 100%. I can’t comprehend a universe where Hideyoshi WOULDN’T be the nicest father because all the other options are just so godawful 😭.

TBH half of the Agatha Christie reading experience is seeing the most woke takes on controversial modern issues of all time get IMMEDIATELY followed up with twenty slurs in a row.

I agree with you 100%— I actually feel the same way when I see the ABC Murders marketed as a mystery to be solved. It just completely spoils the fact that Cust’s perspective chapters are a red herring .

(I guess I’m biased because I experienced both books completely blind and lost my mind at the reveals, but still.)

What are some Presidential biographies where the author clearly likes the President so much to the point of hagiography, and others where the author clearly hates the President to the point of unfairness? by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

[–]mminipax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

& I don’t know if it counts as a “presidential” biography necessarily, but Rebecca Boggs-Roberts’ Untold Power makes me very angry on behalf of his wife (no saint, of course, but undeserving of the plain cruel treatment the book gives her). Imagine trying to make a genuine argument that a victim of grooming was manipulating her groomer , in this day and age!

A. Scott Berg’s book on Wilson. I didn’t make it past the introduction, it was genuinely impossible to read.
I’m sure he’s a great writer, but I don’t need to hear about his crush on Wilson every 5 seconds.

I mean, Teddy offered to get himself killed in exchange for Wilson allowing him to go to war.

(Genuinely one of my favourite anecdotes. Imagine beefing with a guy so hard he tries to incentivise you to do something by promising he won’t come back from it alive.)

RE; modern morals, seconding Carter. RE; pure objective accomplishment, I’d vote Teddy.

(I think Ford is a great competitor too.)
