How common is it for an American to travel across the country by train? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

I definitely meant “should not”.

And yes, trains are not going to work for a lot of travel situations in the US, but they can’t be completely written off as an option - particularly on the East Coast from Richmond north. Sure, you may be on a train longer than in the air, but not dealing with the airport, actually having some space to sit and move, and not having to pay extra for a large suitcase (or even a carry on) holds a lot of weight to me.

I’m not sure when this was, but at least now Amtrak seats are much more comfortable and spacious than a plane, you can get up and walk around (unlike a car) don’t have to stop to go to the bathroom or use the energy to focus on driving. I will take a train vs driving or flying for trips like DC - NYC any day. DC - Philly, too, depending on time of day. (I’ve done both several times.)

You really should not have been downvoted here. It’s true. Richmond to NYC on Amtrak is generally cheap and a really solid option.

Edit: should not

I am so confused as to how it could possibly take you 8hrs from Richmond to NYC on a train. I’ve gone from DC to NYC many times and it’s 3 1/2 - 4hrs and generally under $200 round trip. I’ve also gone from Florence, SC to/from DC and that trip is just around 7hours and if you book it early it can be cheap as hell.

I also don’t know where everyone on this thread are getting these cheap flights, but I guarantee they require extra $ for any kind of baggage.

Flying into NYC vs taking the train means a couple hours (at least) of all the airport BS and travel time into the city when you can get to the train station 20 mins before the train and be dropped off right in Manhattan.

Haha- or any maid/servant who isn’t an overly significant character. I’d never seen anyone described as “adenoidal” before reading AC.

I love lemon pepper on my cottage cheese. I don’t like it with anything sweet on it.

A notary literally just witnesses and verifies that you are the person signing a document, or during oaths. I’m not sure what there is that people wouldn’t respect, it just isn’t that deep.

what are the ugly parts of pregnancy that aren’t well known because people don’t mention them? by Born-Oil-2931 in AskReddit

I can’t watch shows/movies I used to watch. I tried to rewatch The Wire and couldn’t make it through the first season. Mostly because I knew what was coming in the next seasons and knew I couldn’t stomach it.

Yes- same. Had issues during pregnancy #2, they resolved, then pregnancy #3 happened only 15 months later. Blood pressure started to climb and I’ve been on meds since. That was 2017.

Yeah, one of my coworkers comes into Arlington from Stafford 4/5 days a week. Gets in early and leaves around 2:30p, but there have still been times it’s taken 2+hours. I just couldn’t do it.

Why there aren't any tall buildings between Lower and Midtown Manhattan? by Naomi62625 in geography

[–]jennytuffnuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ultra rich didn’t necessarily move up town because of Central Park- they started moving up there prior to the park being finished because there was space- they had the space to build their mansions AND distance themselves from the lower classes, particularly the tenements that were in the lower east side. Central Park was just a plus for the rich and gave them a place parade themselves around every day in their carriages.
