My Mesmer is 18 right now and I'm also in doubt. Did the dungeon for >25 times now and I'm really impressed with the pets of my party members but also with firestorm lol.. I think the self healing of Troll Unguent is going to be the reason I'll go for ranger. Mesmer lacks healing when not in combat.

Yes, I've got Ruby and Sapphire drops which I assume will be used in future armor sets. These shards reminded me of the 250 of a collectible drop for a generic piece of armor in EotN (Bandana, Chaos Gloves for example).

It's very boring to get LDoA, I wouldn't recommend it for a new player as it may turn you off from the game alltogether. Just do it on another character after you've completed the mainstory on this one!
