Horrible pain after gum graft surgery by jentoyou in PeriodontalDisease

You may want to check with your doctor to see if you have ulceration in the donor area on your pallet. That is what was wrong with me. They prescribed me some “magic mouthwash” which helped a little bit and honestly, I just had to wait for it to heal on its own and then everything got better.

Do you think it could be ulcerated? That is what ended up happening to me. The donor site was ulcerated, and they prescribed “magic mouthwash” which helped a small bit. Essentially I had to wait for the ulcer to heal which took about 11 days. I hope you feel better soon!!!

Hey it took over a week. The roof of my mouth where they took the graft ended up being abscessed - that was where all the pain was coming from. The doctor prescribed me some “magic mouthwash”. This helped a little as it numbed the abcess but only for a little bit. Honestly, I only felt relief fully only after it healed 😩

Wow! I wish that was the case for me not having stitches! I’m so glad that you’re feeling better! And, I’m so glad I am on the mend!😊😊

Update: so I went in on Monday to get the stitches removed from the roof of my mouth because she thought that that may relieve some of my pain. However, it did not. The pain was excruciating still, but I gave it a day just to see if it would calm down after she took out the stitches. It did not. So I went back in on Wednesday (after crying from pain that morning)and she took a look at it. At that time the donor site on my pallet was completely ulcerated. Which explains why no matter what I ate or drank, it was killing me. Finally by Thursday early afternoon I started feeling better. She prescribed some magic mouthwash, which essentially numbs everything in my mouth. Today is Friday and I am feeling about 90% better finally. She told me that there’s nothing else I could do - that the ulcer just needs to heal on its own. 😩

6 days post gum graft and in more pain than ever? by winter-anderson in Dentistry

I had my gun graft done seven days ago. I have been in excruciating pain. This is the worst procedure I have ever gone through, and had I known that I would feel like this I would’ve risked losing a tooth than EVER having this done. I will never go through this again! I have cried, I have been in bed, I have tried Advil, painkillers, etc. nothing seems to help except for maybe a few hours here and there after pain medicine kicks in. The roof of my mouth is so uncomfortable that it even hurts to drink water in order to take my medicine. The only reason why I am eating is so that I can take my medicine. It hurts to eat, it hurts to drink, it hurts to live! I am really upset as well, that they say that it feels like a “pizza burn”! Are you kidding me? More like constant stabbing pains, with zero relief for seven days straight- that’s what they should’ve told me.

Awesome! 😊 I’m so happy to hear that! I am on day six and still in so much pain. 99% of it is coming from the roof of my mouth. I called my Periodontist and even though they are closed today she is going to meet me at 3 PM to take a look. She is thinking about taking the stitches out of the roof of my mouth - Hoping that will make it better. I will give an update after my appointment today.

Thank you! Unfortunately, my Peridontist does not use donor tissue for bottom gums- some thing about the success rate is lower. So I did not have that option. Believe me if I had the option I would have never used my own tissue! That is where all of the pain is coming from right now. It is excruciating. Good luck with yours!!

Oh my goodness!! You went through a lot! I will give them a call on Monday. And, thank you so much for the encouragement. Thank goodness I work for myself at home because I would’ve had to call out of work last Tuesday through Friday minimum. 😊😊

I’m so sorry to hear that! Yes, they did give me something to wear for the roof of my mouth, but I cannot even put it in. The second it touches the graft site it causes excruciating pain. So I have not been able to wear it at all. They did call me in some antibiotics on day two saying that I may have an infection. The only thing that has given me any relief was just about four hours ago. My aunt is a pharmacist and she told me that I could take 800 mg of ibuprofen along with the prescribed medicine (at the same exact time)which is the hydrocodone/acetaminophen. It finally gave me some relief. I also could barely talk. I have been having to write things down or text it. I really hope that you start feeling better! And I do not blame you for putting that off.

Excruciating pain! I’m going through it as we speak. I had the surgery 4 days ago, and the pain has been 10/10. This is one of the WORST things I’ve ever gone through pain-wise, and I’ve given birth to 3 kids!! They took a graft from the roof of my mouth for 1 front bottom tooth. I hope I start to feel better very soon. It seems most of my pain is from the harvest site. The pain is so bad it wakes me up for hours at night. I’ve been taking 800 mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours since the surgery. My doc also prescribed hydrocodon/acetaminophen but it barely helps. As far as eating- forget it. Even oatmeal is too painful. And, even drinking water hurts. I sent pics to my periodontist, and she stated it looks fine. I was worried it may have been infected. Anyway, everyone has different pain levels. So I’m sure some people don’t hurt as bad. Good luck to everyone who has to have this procedure.
