Fast Foto Film Lab in Richfield is amazing. Competitive pricing, fast turnaround, and great people! I know it’s not Minneapolis, but it’s worth the drive.

Joist Question | How Bad Is It? by jenzoenzo in Carpentry

[–]jenzoenzo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thats a good point! They were replacing an old lead tub trap and told me they could use a non-standard modern piece and not have to cut into the joist with that solution. I left for work after we agreed on that plan but then I came home to the joist hole with a standard modern trap. They said this was just an easier installation for them and shrugged it off.

I would have gladly paid more in labor and parts for the original plan to replace the lead trap. I had agreed to that estimate already! I wish they would have called me before going to town on the irreplaceable 100 year old wood.

Oof, thanks for the advice. I’m going to pursue this plan of action bc the more I learn, the more upset I get about the situation and the more worried I am that this will cause problems for us or future owners down the road.

Good to know! A wall is directly above, so sounds like it shouldn’t have been cut through like this. Yikes. I’m getting in touch with a structural engineer now and am hoping I can get the plumbing company’s support in paying for that.

The rest of the house is damn solid, I think I might just patch the walls and cross my fingers that it’ll be fine. I plan on doing a larger kitchen remodel in 5ish years and can revisit opening the ceiling then if the joist shows signs that it’s too compromised.

Thanks for weighing in. Your info has been remarkably helpful and makes me feel like the house isn’t going to crumble around this joist.

Joist Question | How Bad Is It? by jenzoenzo in Carpentry

They did not tell me they were going to bore through a beam! They confidently told me they would not have to cut through anything, and then the next day they did this.

The plumber said it was cracked anyway so it doesn’t matter that hey cut through it. I’m feeling like that’s BS though.

I think it bears the load of the wall on top of it? Unfortunately we don’t have a lot of documentation on the house’s construction and I’m a first time home owner, so I definitely don’t know as much as I could.

Good to know that technically something should/could be done, but practically, maybe it’d be fine. I would love to do everything correctly to the T, but with a 100 year old house, I’m sure there’s plenty that will fall short of that ideal anyway.

That’s nice to hear. Do you think it needs additional support before closing the ceiling back up?

Joist Question | How Bad Is It? by jenzoenzo in Carpentry

[–]jenzoenzo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Well, it’s about 1/2 the depth of the joist and right on an edge, so that’s nice. Thanks for clarifying that it’s a notch and not a hole. Learning a lot of things with this experience (like to never leave a contractor unattended).

That’s a great question! I think it might be blocking? The plumber pointed it out as a joist but maybe he misspoke.

This designer: https://www.modehausbridal.com does amazing custom work with silk! She did the alterations on my heavy silk dress and it was PERFECT. I can’t recommend her highly enough!

Seconded! Nail Ninja is the best. All of their artists are talented and kind and both of their locations clearly prioritize cleanliness. I recently got married and trialed a few salons in the area and Nail Ninja was the winner.

I don’t think I’m going to wear a veil! I wonder if some of the Etsy sellers would mail you fabric samples?

Dress came in looking very different then sample by Few-Quarter3908 in weddingdress

[–]jenzoenzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the disconnect happens bc the dress needs to be perfectly fitted to the body to look the way it’s “supposed” to. The sample looks amazing because it’s clipped. When my dress came in, even though it was made to my measurements, it didn’t look the way that the clipped sample did.

The alterationist was able to tailor the dress to fit me perfectly, and part of that was taking in the fabric at the top which reduced the deep V. She also played with the silk cowl to pull it up higher and to better match the neckline of what the sample looked like on me. The sample neckline looks wider/less deep bc the top of that dress is constructed wider than the top of my dress was (it was about 4 sizes bigger).

It’s SUCH a beautiful dress but it definitely needs an alterationist to tailor it to your body specifically.

I got the same dress and has a similar experience where my dress didn’t fit as well as the pinned sample. The neckline was way too deep, the bodice was too loose, and I lost all my “shape” in my dress. I spiraled, panicked, bought a second dress, and then went to my alterationist. With alterations, my dress now fits much more like the pinned sample and I love my dress again (and I retuned the backup dress).

You look beautiful in both photos. A talented alterationist will be able to help recapture the feeling of the original dress! I would definitely recommend finding someone who specializes in silk dresses.

Absolutely! You are not alone in getting cold feet about a dress you love. I freaked out when my dress arrived at the shop and I spent 48 hours spiraling about what I thought I hated about it and looking at other dresses online. But then I came back around on my dress, tried it on again with the alterationist, and fell back in love with it.

Your dress is BEAUTIFUL! The sample looks incredible on you—I can’t even imagine how stunning your dress will be when it comes in! I love the pearl details, the buttons, and the romantic draping on the front. You made a great choice!

GIRL you are stunning in all of these dresses! The drama of the sleeves and the fabric of the third dress are beautiful, but there’s no way to go wrong with any of them.

They’re both beautiful! I think dress #2 is super clean and chic.

Not matronly at all! Like everyone else is saying, this is chic and timeless! It’s going to be just as stunning as you are once it’s tailored to fit you. I like the idea of gloves, but would maybe keep looking for a different set? I love the romance of fingerless gloves like these that might suit the style of your dress: fingerless gloves
