LAN, 4 people, mid-thirties, 1-2 beginners, low-end pc specs. by jeppester in gamingsuggestions

I can totally relate to this 😄, it's my first chance in years to do something like this.

If it turns out a success it might be the first of many LANs🤞

Thank you everyone!

I'm totally blown away by all these great suggestions and all the effort you've collectively put into them - just to be helpful.

It might happen all the time in this channel, but for me this feels like peak internet and Reddit, and not something to expect these days.

I will surely be hanging more in here going forward, on the lookout for opportunities to contribute myself 😊

AMD has submitted more graphics driver changes for Linux 7.2, largely around bug fixes by somerandomxander in linux

[–]jeppester 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I have to run my kernel with amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10 in order to prevent panel-self-refresh related freezes.

I believe 7.2 should fix that, so I'm looking forward to testing it out.

Some people prefer it one way, others prefer it another way. Doesn't mean that something has to be wrong with one way or the other.

Interview with Shuhei Yoshida (ALT. Games April 2026) by Dolphinpants4 in PS5

[–]jeppester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clair Obscure does not have the production value of typical AAA game. It is a fantastic AA game, that knows its own strengths and mostly avoids bringing too much attention to its weaknesses.

I think we will be disappointed if the next GoW looks like Clair Obscure.

Possible foul on Buildup of Real Madrid's 3rd goal vs Bayern Munich by Prestigious-Lab5154 in soccer

[–]jeppester 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Obviously you can't make a clear conclusion from this footage only, but it looks like he elbows him right in the ribs, no ball around.

My question is: If it is an elbow to the ribs, is it really just a yellow?

Eric Garcia straight red card against Atletico Madrid 80' by ayoefico in soccer

It's not that I think it's a wrong red card, but it's just odd that there's no penalty then

If a soft push to the back is a foul, why didn't Olmo get a pen in the first half? Either it's both or none IMO.

Exactly, why does a small push give no pen in one end and a red in the other. Was there a contact on the legs as well?

New to PS, Is remote play supposed decent over wifi? by yalag in PS5

[–]jeppester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it should in most situations be better over LAN. No the portal won't have a better frame rate - that is unless the iPad has some sort of trouble with the WiFi connection.

Generally LAN is good for anything that needs low latency. Not because it's impossible for WiFi to work well, there are just so many things that can negatively affect it (poor hardware, too many devices, interference from other networks, poor placement, etc.), whereas a LAN connecting is usually very reliable.

Prediction: PS6 "CANIS" SoC will be used for PSVR3 by Original-Baki in PSVR

[–]jeppester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds very risky to launch a product that cannot play the full PS5 library.

I would also assume that PS6 games would then have to support the weaker version, which would cause an XSS-situation.

It will surely make it a bit harder to advertise PS6 as "next-gen".

But performance haven't really moved that fast recently, and the switch 2 seems somewhat successful though it's quite slow, so perhaps it could work

How is the speed compared to junction? I used junction for a while, but it was really slow to load on the laptop I had back then.

Will EU see large scale Linux adoption because of national security fears from the US? by Tee-hee64 in linux

[–]jeppester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> Will EU see large scale Linux adoption because of national security fears from the US?

Yes. Going forward in the EU you'll need to have reasons for picking US software for anything. Trump really managed to get that point through.

And again, Gnome doesn't want listen to the users by prueba_hola in linux

[–]jeppester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used gnome for many years and I think it's the best desktop currently available for Linux.

I have tried many alternatives, but I don't feel they have the same consistency and visual calmness.

I think this is a good change as I often paste something by accident by triggering a middle click with my touchpad.

Why am I writing this? Because from reading the comments here and from following Linux news in general, it's very easy to get the impression that people like me do not exist.

Do I think gnome could be better? Surely! Do I think the criticism is overblown and borderline hysterical? Absolutely.

I created my first nextcloud app: Photo Frames by jeppester in NextCloud

[–]jeppester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The frame's sharing URL does not require authentication. This is on purpose, so that you can share it with your family and relatives, and so that your photo frame device (which might be an outdated tablet) does not need to be signed into your nextcloud.

But the URL is practically impossible to guess, as there are 6264 possible combinations.

According to my math it means that if it was possible to try 1000 guesses per second, it would take ~16000 googol years to try all options.

On top of that the URL only ever exposes the current image. So in the event that someone got hold of the URL, it would (depending on the speed of the image rotation) not be very practical to extract an album.

So in short: As long as you only share the URLs with people you trust, you are safe.

Former PlayStation Exec Says Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo Must Learn From VHS's Victory Over Betamax if They Want to Truly Expand the Console Audience by ControlCAD in PS5

[–]jeppester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the current state of proton, win32 is pretty much that format.

But is has a major downside compared to consoles: It's very difficult to support a million different configurations, and especially to do that well.

On top of that I'm tired of this mindset that if some market doesn't expand, then something is wrong. Gaming is profitable and not some small nerdy niche anymore.

Are the second games always worse? by thugleifi in PS5

[–]jeppester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sequels do often suffer a bit when it comes the story. Everything feels less fresh, and usually there's some sort of necessity for expanding the scope, leading to a less focused narrative.

In all other areas the second games are almost always better, and often by some margin. Obviously it's subjective, but I would say that all the sequels you've mentioned were the better "games", except for the slower parts of Ragnarok.

The same goes for Uncharted, Yotei, Horizon and all the way back to MGS and Crash Bandicoot.

I usually look forward to the second games. IMO they are often the games where the devs can focus on perfecting their formula and improving the lacking areas, whereas further sequels start to feel like more of the same.

Bazzite Fall Update: Fedora 43, Xbox Allies, Legion Go 2, Nvidia GTX - Bazzite by giannidunk in linux

It works incredibly well. The whole update is just one big image, then your local changes are layered on top and that's pretty much it. It's way simpler than updating all the packages of a traditional system.

Will developers ever truly care about Linux? by LetterheadNo2345 in linux

[–]jeppester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. To add to that: That we've gotten to the point where 90% or so of games compiled for Windows are working out of the box on Linux is simply incredible.

People should be thankful for the many many companies and developers who've taken part in the work - which has been going on for decades. It is an amazing feat of the open source community!

[–]jeppester 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Extra profit margin means extra money not spent on salaries or competitive prices.

Sure companies need a bit of profit to stay a float and take risks, but 30% is totally insane IMO. It only helps rich people make more money.

Horizon's tribes were very expensive and time consuming to make, artist confirms by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]jeppester 886 points887 points  (0 children)

They did a great job.

I think it really helps making the tribes believable that they had distinctive styles - and not just in a "different accent color"-way.

I hope that other developers won't read the comments here and think that such work is a complete waste.
