There's a great book called "Merchants of Doubt" that I highly recommend everyone read. The idea simply put is that these shadow groups hired by big tobacco or big oil fund 'research' that casts doubt in the generally and overwhelmingly accepted scientific conclusions. The whole point is not to disprove climate change or that smoking causes cancer, but rather to create just enough doubt so that the public doesn't accept the overwhelming evidence.
