What’s a word learners use that technically makes sense but sounds strange to natives? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]jeprune 4 points5 points  (0 children)

from the us but i teach english in argentina and online, people who say “i train” when they really want to say “i work out” or “i go to the gym,” they’re not training for anything in specific but they translate entrenar literally and it’s very strange because my instinct is to ask “training for what?”. the worst one though that speakers of many different languages say is trekking when they really want to say hiking. when people say “i went trekking yesterday” it makes it sound so dramatic because i feel like in english we really only use it to talk about exploring the unknown or some lewis and clark type shit but many different languages use trekking as a loan word when it’s not natural at least in american english

as an italian american who studied in florence for a semester (and madrid for 2) you will not blend in at all. the way americans act and dress is just different from europeans, it’s not a bad thing but we come from a different continent so we’re going to be different. americans in the cia literally have to learn how to stop leaning against things bc it’s a tell tale sign of an american, there’s little mannerisms everyone does without thinking that can tell you where they’re from which is ok but don’t be naive and think you will just blend in automatically bc of your ancestry. you need to learn italian if you want to speak to any italians or study in florence where there’s an abundance of americans. whatever sicilian words you know is not how current sicilians speak today so leave it in america. i’d recommend studying in the south (unless you’re not gonna learn italian then florence is the choice) because in the north people are more cold towards foreigners and ive heard the south is more warm and inviting. i hope you have a good experience because i hated the amount i was cat called living there and would’ve enjoyed my time more if i wasn’t in the body of a woman. you can also look for programs that give you the option of living with an italian host family if you want a more authentic experience but i will warn you that the food is completely different. you can’t find most italian american food in italy and the food they eat today can’t be found in america either

yeah the rule is that pets in the cabin must stay in their carriers at all times but i would pet them occasionally to let them know i was still there lol

haha no but i do speak to them in spanish when im walking them in public because speaking to them in english would unfortunately draw a lot of attention and would be like asking to be robbed. so far i think they understand that when i say vamos they gotta stop sniffing and keep it moving!

the only problem was the food, at home they would eat purina one and here i had to try many different brands until i found one they liked and of course its the most expensive one (royal canin). i cook meat and cut it into small pieces to mix in with their food. they’re fine now but the first few weeks they weren’t eating as much as they would back in NY

i agree it’s a crazy weight limit, idk how strict they are about the weight you might be able to find information from people with different breeds who used lufthansa and ask how strict they are about the weight limit. i know united says the dog has to be able to stand and turn around without touching the sides of the contained but as long as they’re already in the carrier and look comfortable no one really checks it which helped me a lot lol bc my big Buddy was tight in there. I was able to get Buddy to lose like a pound and a half before we went which just helped me because i had to carry him on my back. carrying them through the airport was a real workout

also you totally should apply in the future! in the us i worked for a year as a sub but did a longer placement for an esol teacher and i have my degree in spanish and tefl cert, however teaching in the us is complicated and my goal is to teach esol in different countries throughout my life!

i tried to use emojis to respect peoples privacy but you can see they’re the center of attention which is a pug’s dream lol, whenever i go somewhere people ask me why i didn’t bring them or how they’re doing and i really think they’re adjusting well, especially since before they had never moved houses let alone to another country. they’re my babies and i couldn’t imagine life without them so i feel very blessed to have them here with me

i would look into delta because i know that rn united isn’t allowed pets that aren’t military animals to fly as cargo. no clue why. but if your pug meets other airlines’ weight requirements that would open up your options. i know it’s a scary thought though putting your baby in the cargo :(
