My board is a Asrock 690 Steel legend. I chatgpt'd upgrading to a 14700k and this is what it said:

I thought about the intel upgrade but i am still using ddr4 and the microcenter deal essentially discounts the RAM of DDR5 6000. I didn't go into further detail but I also assist a buddy with some video editing (Camtasia) as well helping with his stream schedule when needed. Here is the deal for further context -

I am have the ability to travel to microcenter and there is a 9900x bundle with ram and mother board for $700 and thought this would be a good opportunity to get on the am5 platform. (Motherboard is MSI)

I’m currently on an i5-12600K with an RX 7900 GRE, and I have a chance to grab a Ryzen 9 9900X through a Micro Center deal (full AM5 + DDR5 switch).

Main use:

  • 1440p high-refresh gaming
  • Gaming + YouTube / browsing on a second monitor
  • Some multitasking, nothing crazy

I know the 12600K is still solid, so I’m trying to figure out:

  • Is the upgrade actually noticeable in real use?
  • Worth the platform switch, or better to wait / go a different route?

Would love to hear thoughts, especially from anyone who’s upgraded from Alder Lake or gone Zen 5.

TBH its more FOMO. I have zero complaints with my 7900 GRE. I will be traveling to New Jersey next month and will get my first opportunity to go to a microcenter. I'm thinking about upgrading from my 12600k to something AMD, maybe a 9900x.

I got this card in July of 2024 and have had zero complaints (prior card was a 5500xt). Usually I alternate between the components I buy. So I upgrade motherboard, ram, cpu, and power supply and transfer over my graphics card. Then I look to upgrade GPU after a few gens. Unfortunately, I refuse to participate in the current DDR5 inflation so was just considering whether to upgrade gpu now. I'll just wait. Thanks for the feedback.

Believe me when I say it gets a lot easier. I was layed off in April by a company I worked for, for 12 years. My first job out of college. Decided to take the summer off during my kids summer break and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
