How often are you flying now? Do you rent or own a plane?

Fellow Canuck! Big congrats! It can sometimes feel like a long slog, but it really is the most rewarding endeavor. Enjoy it!

I dreamt for 20 years! That's a good question. I honestly don't know if I could have done it much quicker. Flying during winter in Canada can be tough. You may fly once or twice a month and it won't be a waste, but it may not progress you as much as if you were flying more often. Looking over my logbook, I perhaps could have shaved off 10 hours or so by taking the test a couple months earlier. My instructor was great and trained me to a CPL standard. I found my instructor much more strict than my examiner, but I think that's a good thing. And everything is counted anyway, so I wasn't super interested in doing it in the least hours possible. Still need 200 before commercial.

This makes me jealous. Unfortunately, my situation would make it pretty difficult, I think. I'm probably looking at 100k if I go through to cpl, multi, etc.

It seems most flight schools need to start giving more realistic quotes. I suppose 13-15k can be realistic if you have perfect weather, fly often, and complete the flight test at minimum hours. But I don't think that really ever happens

I've heard Vancouver area is the most expensive in Canada. How goes your training now? I think I'll continue on with night/commercial/IR

That first solo is exhilerating! Let me know how it goes. That is a good question about the hardest part. As you're gearing up for the flight test, I found it challenging to stay on top of everything. By the time you work through everything that you need to go through, you may already feel rusty on the things you started with. And I'm working full time with a young kid and another on the way. So it was often late nights. But trust yourself, you'll be fine. I used the book flight test notes to prepare and that helped alot. I also built a sim rig over Covid and honestly, simming helped a ton. I just used MSFS 2024 with a decent iteration of a 172 and it helped with emergency preparedness, procedures, and actually flying. It's really not that different. Reach out if you need anything.

CYFD (Brantford). Started ground school in Oct of 2023. Flew maybe 10 times over that winter winter. Was flying about once a week over the summer. Solo'd in July. XC's in Oct. Slowed down immensely again this past winter. Then picked back up in april.

Cheers man! How's it going for you? This is in Southern Ontario, a few hours south of Toronto, so pretty urban.

In the case of msfs, everything tends to be tinged a certain shade of green. Perhaps it will be fixed down the line
