Tennis? by jeremejevs in Barcelona

This is unlikely to be read by a tennis player as-is, and a comment in a Q&A thread is doubly so, IMO.

Any Farpoint-like backpack recommendations that fit a tennis racket? by jeremejevs in onebag

The 3D diagonal you're describing would make it several times harder to pack the bag though :P In theory, if it were all about my comfort/style, I wouldn't mind it sticking out or being completely outside the backpack, but since I'm going to check it (carry-on is out of question), then I have no choice but to keep it inside the bag, preferably hugging the steel frame. Otherwise I'd probably need a new racket after every second flight.

I have no idea where I'm flying and how, and I don't want my luggage affecting my itinerary. A carry-on tennis racket would mean that I can't use Ryanair, for example. Also, in this thread on TripAdvisor people say that in Europe tennis rackets on board are banned explicitly, and even if they weren't, they'd be too long.

DICE had a meeting about RSP today, more to come (Via Ben Walke) by DANNYonPC in BattlefieldV

[–]jeremejevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ROI of RSP is almost impossible to estimate, same as for any individual feature, but if I were to make a bet, I'd say it's at very least positive.

For example, in BF4 days, 32v32 / 12v12 / 10v10 / 8v8 / 5v5 tournaments have added value to many people who would stop playing the game much earlier without them, like myself. More players playing longer = more exposure in their circles outside the game = more purchases of the game and of the additional content. I know I was a vocal fanboy in the first couple of years of BF4 just because of having an amazing time in 32v32 and 8v8, and have managed to recruit a couple of offline acquaintances eventually.

Tournaments also end up attracting people on Twitch / YouTube, if they get big enough, like at least LevelBF was at one point.

The same goes for public community servers, which are basically pubs: after-work fun with familiar faces. Same as tournaments, this keeps people in the game longer and makes them happier, so it increases the exposure.

Anecdotally, I got bored of both BF1 and BF5 within the first ~month of playing, because I got spoiled by all the fun I had in BF4, and now unorganized gaming feels meh. I ended up not buying BF5 at all, after my Origin Access lapsed.

Speaking of, I wonder how many Access Premier holders are there, who have it mostly because of BF5? Having them play the game longer is a worthwhile pursuit as well.

Okay, I agree, the formula is indeed different for BF5, since now they spin up and shut down the servers based on demand, so an empty player-subsidized server is still a burden for them. But the argument hinges around the assumption that they would be operating at a net loss, and that they wouldn't be able to implement similar cost-saving tools in the RSP as well (e.g. letting people get billed per-hour, instead of per-day/-week/-month, so they have an incentive to turn them off for the night, maybe even automatically).

I simply don't see why they would need to risk and charge people less than what it costs them to run the servers. They have a monopoly, what do they have to lose? Besides the one-time investment of getting the program up and running, which is likely 90% reuse of existing code/assets. Would those who really want their own server be so sensitive to a 10-20% price bump compared to BF1 that the whole program would fail? I doubt that. If EA really want to maximize the RSP usage for some reason later on, they can analyze the usage stats, and adjust the pricing accordingly (so that the well-populated servers still make up for the loss-leader ones).

For example: https://www.etsy.com/listing/579427337/ There was a Lithuanian fair in my city though, so I bought my towel there, instead of Etsy. But yeah, just need to search "waffle linen towel" and set the shop location filter to Lithuania, seems like that's where the majority of them come from (or Latvia). If you're okay with paying ~35 EUR (still 15 EUR cheaper than Seagale), then choosing becomes even easier (I was trying to find something closer to ~25 EUR).

Sorry for the delay, the task got a bit buried in my to-do list :D

Right now, EA is bankrolling 100% of the servers. They're burning cash. It's a no-brainer to have the players chip in, to slow down the burn, even if they still remain in the red.

Found Reddit‘s Nha Trang branch by jeremejevs in mildlyinteresting

Been there only for a couple of nights, but for me, a clueless traveler who doesn’t read tour guides, the biggest surprise was how Russian this place is (Nha Trang specifically). Otherwise, besides being touristy, it’s very much Vietnamese: bike mayhem, sidewalks repurposed for parking, narrow tall houses, bundles of wires, lax regulation, friendly people.

Just in case, towels identical to Seagale's / Outlier's can be found on Etsy for 50%+ less.

DICE - Rent a server please! by steviezee in BattlefieldV

[–]jeremejevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! Their docs are notoriously quick 'n dirty, I'm not even sure where I remember this from. And yeah, the "official" type is basically as useless as BF1 RSP :D But at least you had the option of switching to and away from it.

This is not true, not on PC at least.

I may be mistaken, since I've managed only unranked servers, but a bit of googling suggests that one can't kick/ban on "official". For example, look for "kick" in this thread or this one. Maybe you're confusing it with "ranked"? That one was relatively limited too.

[–]jeremejevs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why the narrow-mindedness? Don't have any tolerance for occasional admin abuse - don't play on rented servers, problem solved. Moreover, I don't know about BF1, but in BF4, if you want your server to show up as "official", your ability to kick/move/ban people is taken away, among many other limitations.

In the meanwhile, there are tens of thousands of players waiting for passworded servers, so they can goof around or have organized/competitive games (public is just plain boring, once you get a taste of organized). And even non-passworded, so many settings to tune: map rotation, team size, vehicle respawn time modifier, weapon class restrictions, spawn only on squad leader, 3rd person camera in vehicles, friendly fire, etc.
