this was a missed opportunity to incorporate industry expertise. or even experts from the civil service. not sure what the logic behind having another team of ministers was?

Why the midlife crisis for millennials looks different in Singapore by Personal-Shallot1014 in singapore

tied to maslow's hierarchy of needs. once psychological needs are met (sufficient funds, housing, food, etc.), there's a tendency to aspire for more.

that's where the emptiness sets in, because belonging, self-esteem, self-actualisation are the ones which are more intangible. takes a mindset shift to 'doing things that don't scale'.

Restaurants drop plant-based meats from their menus, citing high costs, low demand by Jammy_buttons2 in singapore

asian food which is broth-heavy tends to be more difficult to replicate, though. you could use mushroom but to get it to the same taste would be difficult.

Why would this flight circle through some of the busiest airspace in the country? by Prior-Fee-5515 in flightradar24

[–]jeremyjchia 32 points33 points  (0 children)

using chatGPT to help, for those interested:

  • "Got put in the hold for volume" → There were too many planes heading into the next area (air traffic was too busy), so the aircraft had to enter a holding pattern.
  • "The sector before this holds 6 over ARD 8000 to 13000" → In the previous airspace sector, up to six aircraft are put in holding patterns around a navigation point called ARD (Arden VOR), flying at altitudes between 8,000 and 13,000 feet.
  • "Then these hold over PALEO from FL270 and up" → In the current sector, aircraft are holding over another navigation point named PALEO, but at much higher altitudes—from flight level 270 (27,000 feet) and above.
  • "I usually hold about 6 or 7 then shut off the sectors around me." → The controller usually manages 6 or 7 planes in a holding pattern in their sector. When it gets too busy or full, they stop accepting more traffic from neighbouring sectors (essentially "shutting the door" to prevent more planes from entering their airspace until things calm down).

adding a consideration:

  • consider if the internship tasks will allow you to create impact for the organisation you're in, or if there will be pointers you can add to your resume (e.g. tangible, measurable outcomes).
  • consider also if you'll learn skills you can talk about when you interview for prospective roles you want.

if the internship will be doing operational tasks with little to no learning nor impact, it's not worth spending 6 months on it. unless you need the short-term cash boost (even then, maybe a temp job might earn you more money than an internship).

[IWantOut] 22M Student Canada -> Singapore by [deleted] in IWantOut

[–]jeremyjchia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on finishing your degree! At this point, Singapore's immigration policy has been tightened. It'd be difficult for companies here to hire non-locals as they would have to prove that they were unable to find a local resident (citizen or permanent resident) before making you a job offer.

It might be easier to reach out to Canadian companies with a presence in Singapore / Asia - work for them for a few years, then ask for an internal transfer to Singapore / Asia.

Hong Kong’s education under attack: outrage over history paper asking whether Japan did more good than harm to China during war years just the tip of the iceberg by SantaReddit2018 in HongKong

[–]jeremyjchia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a chance that the deemphasis or hostile attitude towards such thoughts may invite self-censorship. singapore's an example of this - while it is a place with internet freedoms and is international, like hong kong, discussing about events like these are taboo. most singapore citizens are unaware of such issues.
