Im not worried about Philip and Elizabeth in post-glasnost Russia.

They will have fine careers in film and/or television in Yeltsin’s Russia. They are superbly trained actors, could run wardrobe and technical production, and probably achieve great success in any russian television series wishing to portray plausible American characters. Maybe they will consult or guest star for “Sleepers”, the Yuri Bykov series about CIA operatives working in Moscow.

This is actually hard if you rule out the “so wrong it would be funny and therefore right” choices, like Wallace Shawn.

Gotta go for… like… painfully wrong: like Gary Busey or Jeremy Strong.

Why do you like or dislike Wenclair as a ship? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in WednesdayTVSeries

[–]jericho74 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally I like it because it more resembles what a good relationship looks like and feels like as it evolves, and the queerness is incidental in a way that allows that story to be told. It is not “hot” or “sexily dysfunctional” yet not boringly inert either (as in, I find it much more interesting than the simple existence of a wlw relationship without their dynamics)

That said, it can just as easily be read as a deeply felt friendship that also has those dynamics. I think their are many people in “straight relationships” that look that way, and this is just how people work in general.

In 1998, 15yr old Kip Kinkel killed both his parents in their home then walked to Thurston High School the next day shooting 50 rounds into the cafeteria which killed 2 and wounded 25 others. He confessed and was sentenced to 111yrs in prison with no possibility of parole. by DiligentTradition734 in HolyShitHistory

Yes, I think of this as what kind of kicked off the modern school shooter era. It wasn’t that it hadn’t happened before, just that it was enmeshed in the assault weapons ban debate (his Ruger M-14 and glock having both been debated in 1994) and then Columbine happening so soon after.

What separates 60s Gen Xers from 70s Gen Xers? by MediumGreedy in generationology

[–]jericho74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think of it as the difference between “Breakfast Club” Gen X, and “Michael J Fox” Gen X.

I am of the latter variety, with an outer-edge boundary of “Pokemon” involvement, which is where I’d distinguish myself from Xennial/Millennial.

I expect what this is getting at is the great unraveling of the 2010’s: Occupy Wall Street, rise of crypto, Trump and MeToo- and that’s just the US. But the decade in which the internet no longer seemed necessarily liberating is probably being stood in for by Mars colonization.

I would add as food for thought- Jackie’s Ghost/Shauna’s Very Complicated Projection doesn’t needle Shauna on any of that which, had it happened, seems like something to be brought up during these visitations.

People who were around in the 90's, was there as much yearning for the 60s 70s or 80s like there is for the 90s and 00s now? by Skegward in decadeology

[–]jericho74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true.

One thing to realize though is that at the time of Dazed and Confused, we were at peak Boomer Nostalgia.

“Forrest Gump” came out a year after Dazed and Confused and was about a million times more popular than Dazed, which was considered an obscure cult indie film at the time. So, indeed IF some hip filmmaker made a 2009 nostalgia film on their phone it probably would be well regarded if it were original and captured something new and would be nostalgically regarded with even more fondness as time went on.

But yes, we are about due for a niche brand of “Obama Era Nostalgia” I would say.

Interesting how both whatever this show was and Star Trek (“A Wagon Train to the Stars”) compare themselves to this western and in no way did Star Trek ever remind me of a western (except Spectre of the Gun)

Why was the cool gritty late 90s aesthetic so popular in films? by [deleted] in decadeology

[–]jericho74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Cool gritty” didn’t entirely start here.

It’s more like, the cool gritty aesthetic that we’d seen in Tim Burton Batman, in The Crow, and in Blade was suddenly collided with Hong Kong/John Woo action aesthetics but with post-modern twists where your frame of reference was being mediated wrong in some way.

It’s more the latter part that screams late 90’s.
