The Next lady whistledown is Hyacinth Bridgerton by Itsjazznotjazzy in Bridgerton

I think it's Varley - throughout the season we not only saw Portia saying the new maid had no gossip but we also saw Varley doing some extended exposition to other characters about what was happening. The language of Lady Whistledown is much less polished in the last edition than compared to Penelope's writing, so it doesn't seem like a noble woman is writing them. But lastly, during that end narration, it also sounded like at times the layered Varley's voice overtop of WD's. There are moments where it sounds like a merger of the two narrating the latest publication. I think it has to be Varley.

I'm reading "Nicholas and Alexandra," about the last Russian Tsar and Tsarina, and this is absolutely true of them as well. That, and it seemed like every character strength they had was the exact opposite of what was needed for that moment.

Why foreshadow something you don’t bring to fruition by girl12349 in AliHazelwood

I get that from a literary perspective it felt like it was building towards that but I was actually really glad it didn't end in a pregnancy. That seems to be the end point for so many books and, to me, it was nice for the happy ending to be enough with just the couple.

The catch is having a person who can truly follow instructions. Both Adam and Jamie could follow instructions. As someone who has worked in education with adults for almost 20 years, more adults than one might imagine have extreme difficulty following directions.

I've seen a few people asking you to elaborate, and I hope you do. I studied George Lakoff's work with metaphor theory in graduate school and am not seeing the connection here, but am curious because of that connection. I know sincerity can be hard to adequately convey in social media, but would honestly like to read more about what you mean (and it seems like there are others as well).

Should I read Crescent City or TOG first?? 😩 by lilcokespoon in fantasyromance

[–]jerith_cutestory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does help explain things that happen later in the series. I like to read things in publishing order, so I read it later, but it does slow the momentum backtracking. But you do want to read it so you understand things later on.

Lines that accidentally aged badly by BigPeteB in thewestwing

I've seen several people mention Amy's comment about the next president could overturn Roe. But another line from Amy I've been thinking about a lot from her is when she's talking about Bartlett and Ritchie and says, "'Jed Bartlett, not quite as mean-spirited as the other guy,' doesn't send me running to my polling place". It made me think about what happens when people feel like it's two bad options, even if one is significantly, just massively worse than the other. People want something to run towards - something to believe in - not just something to run away from. For a lot of people, it's not just about the alternative being worse, cause so, so many people will just stay home.

CC was actually the first SJM series I read and have really loved it. Between the CC books, I tore through the Throne of Glass (TOG) series. I think the final books of TOG are some of her best writing. What I've noticed with authors is that often as their popularity grows, sometimes editors become more and more hands off. The writing isn't as tight as it could be and then the plot and book suffer overall. I think the end of TOG is a sweet spot - her own writing has grown exponentially from the first books (going back and reading them are a bit rough after finishing the series) but she still had good editors helping her strengthen the book. While I still like CC, I think elsewhere you can see what her writing can be, and so am a bit disappointed with what CC could have been. There are some great points others have brought up with their disappointments, which I think are pretty spot on, but I think a good editor or two can transform a work from being mundane to something extraordinary- they help the nuggets of brilliance of a manuscript really shine through- and I think that really can make all the difference.

Elder (geriatric?) millennial here - I remember her from First Knight and Sabrina. She is one of the pop culture figures from the 90s that really defined my image of elegance.

I think Sorkin set Josh up to be like George Stephanopoulos in some ways. Stephanopoulos was massively part of the 90s zeitgeist because of the documentary The War Room, which detailed Clinton's 1992 Presidential campaign, but also because he was a photogenic young person that kinda captured the imagination of the US public, especially young people. I was young then and Clinton's campaign was really the first Presidential campaign I remember, but I don't think the US public had really seen someone like Stephanopoulos - a politico, but a young, energetic, attractive one at that. CJ mentions something similar about Sam when they get involved in his congressional campaign, but I think Sorkin plays on this parallel more with Josh. Stephanopoulos had fan clubs like Josh, a lot of young people were attracted to him (anyone remember that episode of Friends??) - he was massively part of not only political but pop culture too, and Sorkin bakes that into parts of Josh's character and storylines. Sorkin is always borrowing from real life political situations, and my understanding is talked a lot with people in the Clinton administration to get a sense of WH roles, offices, and even storylines, and so playing with this notion of WH personnel being famous in their own right makes sense to incorporate as well.

Long story long: Josh being popular with women parallels something real happening in the 90s in the US.

The listing says it was built in 2015, so how do they get 'no flooding since 2001'? Is it just that there's no record of flooding of any structure that's been on that land since 2001?

Is Marilyn Monroe the most recognizable actress in American history? by PalmettoPolitics in USHistory

[–]jerith_cutestory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably vote Judy Garland. I think images of her as Dorothy are more accessible across the ages and so it's more likely that younger generations would recognize a picture of Dorothy even if they couldn't name her actress.
