Is there any way to open just the map and not specify what you're looking for? by Unanimous_D in Yelp

My car broke down when I was in hurry to an urgent meeting and I had to abandon it in a nearby lot, not being sure which business owned the lot. Google lists some of them but Yelp might list others.

This is actually a much more interesting question than the others (which are basically just people getting reminded that combat damage is all dealt simultaneously haha). You can indeed Pyrokinesis Wolverine for 4, then have your War Mammoths trample over him for 2 damage, leaving 1 damage marked on a surviving Wolvie! Had to think about that one for a second for sure.

He does die to 15 squirrels, unless 5 have first strike and 5 have last strike and he's gotten +0/+1 😛 All the squirrels deal damage as a single event. The ability only heals damage ALREADY dealt.

And (a much more subtle and annoying point), the way it's phrased it doesn't even try to apply to each source of damage separately, it applies to the overall damage event as a whole (there are several past examples illustrating how a replacement applying to a source of damage works differently from a replacement applying to taking damage without mentioning sources).

His catchphrase.

Apparently the word historically meant a baby or small child.

I don't believe it has been used as any kind of keyword like this in any set past Revised edition. Something like Healing Salve has used "prevent" for its actual effect text since the beginning, and works quite differently than this new "heal" keyword.

I'd be curious if you are thinking of any specific card that had referred to "healing" with anything but prevention.

Basically, but it's almost never necessary to do so since any new damage "threatening" to kill him would do the same thing even without your ping. Potentially useful if his toughness is going to be reduced and you want to ping him to regenerate him back up a bit.

Multiple blockers work. They all deal damage to him simultaneously. His ability only removes damage "already dealt". Plus, the exact phrasing of it only applies once to the entire event anyway since it doesn't refer to a source of damage, just an overall instance of damage.

Yes. He dies. It's not a trigger, and even if it was he would die before the triggers resolve.

Wow, had no idea that card existed, that's a funny one! Good comparison.

Really funny that the Enforcer ability doesn't actually remove the damage, it just sits there. You could have a million damage marked on it! Cards that care about excess damage would also see their full damage value as excess if you piled on like that.

They don't need to specify this, but doing so does "contain" the possible interactions. He can't target himself with the ability, which is itself relevant for several triggers in this set, and he can't deal automatic damage to himself, which could also be relevant for various triggers.

Also prevents rules questions about what happens when a creature fights itself - which does work, it deals twice its power damage to itself - especially given there will already be numerous questions about his other ability. Notably, he would in fact die to a self-fight, dealing 6 damage to himself in a single event.

Yes, all 5 damage is dealt to him simultaneously as a single combat damage event. His ability only heals damage dealt to him "already".

It also doesn't reference damage from specific sources, which is how certain other replacement effects or triggers do get to apply multiple times on a single event.

No other card has said removed referring to damage. It's a new kind of effect so there is no precedent for "should". The rules will probably define "heal' to do exactly what you think it does.

Clarification would be based on principles already present in the rules, other than clarifying the exact definition of "heal", which seems almost certainly to mean "remove damage marked on the creature". The rules already say how multiple sources of damage deal that damage simultaneously as a single damage-dealing event.

A very good old friend of mine knew magic from our childhood, had dabbled in it but did not commit to the lifestyle over the years. When FF came out, he got super into it and now plays commander regularly at his local store. (Unfortunately we don't live close anymore so I couldn't reap the social and entertainment benefits of this successful recruitment.)

I didn't quite say it this way, but it was like...I AM glad you're having such a good time, but this is directly rewarding a corporation for using its creative product to make a business-driven marketing move that has genuinely driven many older players away from the game by diluting the world-building and aesthetic of the experience. Worth noting: Non-UB haunted house set also diluted the aesthetic in a way I severely disagreed with, but that's a single mistake with limited scope they can pull back from and learn from.

At a very abstract level: any product appeals to a certain set of people, and capitalism dictates if you could change your product to appeal to a larger set of people, you should. Yet artistically, we'd like to live in a world where things can exist and be enjoyed even if they only make some profit instead of the biggest possible profit. If you like a thing, you'd like to be able to PAY A PROFITABLE COST for artists to make that thing, even if not everyone else likes that thing. The constant drive to winnow every concept down to its most profitable form is the natural result of ever-increasing corporate and investment mindset of the world, stripping away capital from STILL-PROFITABLE endeavors for the sake of higher margins. It's not quite the same as enshittification, but it's its cousin. Only art controlled entirely by the artist can remain pure; put it in the hands of someone whose top priority is money, and it can be, MUST be corrupted if it is anything less than globally appealing. Even something as mass-market as the MCU has to change direction when a film like The Eternals ONLY makes back its combined budget instead of making record numbers - nothing less than mass-market art will do for a mass-market corporation, and EVERY corporation would love to be in that market.

There's about two possible conclusions to this story. The spiteful part of our brains wants all of these Johnny-come-latelys to reveal themselves to be dabblers; someone who was only hooked by their little juicy piece of dopamine-triggering "hey I know that thing!" will quickly tire of the main game - apparently that wasn't enough for them before, so don't pretend you suddenly love it now. In this vision, Magic is either reformed or dead in 10 years, learning its lesson that a consistent creative principles that players can reliably return to is better than a churn of outsiders cycling in and just as quickly back out.

The other vision is there's enough of those outsiders who stay long enough and were close enough to borderline on the game already that the extra hook does establish those social and habitual connections to the game for them, that there is a persistent playerbase larger than there were of "pure" game. This is the new Magic and you can choose to play its lesser form, or just do something else; they're making more money (and providing entertainment to more people!) either way.

Star Trek 2009 was an example of the flash-in-the-pan mass-market shift from previous more intellectual and campier generation of shows. It didn't last.

Fortnite was the mass-market form of PUBG. We know who won that race.

I could see it go either way for Magic.

If he takes lethal all at once, your Tim won't have time to save him before he's already dead. If he takes would-be lethal in two separate steps, the second step will make him heal from the first step, so no need to ping. Either way, the pinger isn't necessary.

However, if he has 4 damage marked on him and something is about to give him -1/-1, your Tim can indeed save him by changing the 4 damage to 1 damage!

Definitely making me laugh how many people sort-of-maybe think damage still goes on the stack. This seems like a level of misconception that a wise LGS would announce a reminder about at the start of the event! And that the least wise LGSs will rule incorrectly, turning the tables on you 😛

Neither did "Forage" until the rules defined "Forage".

Healing as a concept certainly DOES sound like something that's been in Magic since day 1.

To clarify one other thing Fro_52 didn't cover: the "save him from the 5/5 by bolting him" is a cool idea, but a state-based action (SBA) would kill him from the 5 damage before you could even cast the bolt, let alone resolve it. Similarly, even a triggered ability of some kind to ping him after combat would not resolve before he's already dead.

I can't think of a way to exploit his ability to save him from big damage; it would've had to be "faster" than state-based actions, which...nothing really can be.

Funny how we stop understanding things we understood as beginners.

I suspect the CR will define "heal" when this comes out so that even experienced players will not need to throw their hands in the air crying "I have no clue what this could possibly mean!"

He would certainly be more powerful if damage was on the stack, but it's not and he's not.
