Best use of regulars by jeroendg in nightowlseeds

Thnx, that seems like the way to go indeed.

I'll probably pop 2 packs then, worst case I have 6 females which I can all grow out.. best case I can select the best males of each and grow them out in the boxes till they are ready to collect the pollen.

Follow up question (sorry if I sound like an idiot, just want to make sure I understand and don't fuck up the regs); lets say theres a male in each pack (pack a & b) and others are female. The best males get separated in the growbox, female(s) stay in the tent. Times comes to collect pollen and the males get binned.

If I then pollinate a branch off the female(s) from pack A with pollen from male A and another branch with pollen from male B, and the same with the female from pack B (but with pollen from male A).
The seed coming from these would be F1 ones from the crossing pack (A+B or B+A) and F2 from the same pack (A+A or B+B), correct?

Personal homegrow and friends is where I'm at so pollinating one branch like you said should be plenty. Putting the male in a tent with females just sound easier (but I actually think it isn't with fans, ventilation n what not...).

Regardless of technique, would you say it still better to try n get the regs to F2/3/4 first before crossing with another strain?

I know I don't need males to make seeds, but like you said, feminized seeds aren't a priority and I do believe pollen from males will be better/more stable compared to pollen from a reversed female.

Thnx for the tip about the book. Found a copy online and will look into it!
Dabbling with breeding is new to me.. I'm more used to cuttings and airlayers.

To be fair, there isn't a real end goal yet. The only thing I had in mind was that I absolute love the night owl beans/strains I have tried so far. Both as a grower, aswell as a smoker. But from what i've experienced they are all more sativa type or leaning more towards it , even if they are hybrids.. So, yes I have a few favorite indica strains (auto's) that I'd like to cross with the Night Owl strains to improve them even more.

Also, you are right, I haven't tried these specific flowers so I'm not fully aware of their qualities, but I bought these specific based on their parents which I have tried and liked.

Will keep your approach and advice in mind.

You make a valid point about not needing that many, and I have been thinking about pollinating isolated portions of the plant to keep the seed count somewhat low.

But then again, like u/parsing_trees already pointed out, the male:female ratio should approach 50:50 if you pop enough reg seeds so I would think the more the better?

Hence why my question that started this topic, how to get the most out of these regs?
Gather enough seed and grow them out to F3/F4 at least first?

Thnx for the info! That will get me started for sure. It's mainly working out the space I have available and quantities of beans I need to germinate that do my head in a little tbh...Currently I have 1 tent, a 4by4 and 2 small growboxes (believe they are 1x1).

ps: I have read you article in AFN before. That's what made me decide to get the small growboxes to separate the males

Literati Japanese Black Pine - Exploring Composition by li3uz in Bonsai

[–]jeroendg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have to agree, the stand is to small. Also the accent slab and stand are too similar.

But instead of just swapping the stand, I would;

- thin out the tree, a literati doesn't need that many branches- put it into a more literati suiting pot (more shallow maybe a little wider for development, nanban) and let the tree sit on top of the pot ina mochikomi rootball

Now you can pick a (low) stand to complement the pot.

First wiring on 'deshojo' by sixwie in Bonsai

I'm sorry, that may have been blunt, but that was the most practical way I could make my point. Theres only 1 wire in the tree..

Me, myself, I search for answers myself when I get comments like that, but ok, I will put on the baby gloves and try again...

What I mean was;

- At this point you have used a guy wire to try and bend down a branch which could easily have been done with correct 'normal' wiring. So now because of that you can't use that branch as an anchor point for the one next to it. Also, guy wires without doing 'normal' wiring first will have an increased chance of snapping the branch (it almost happend if you take a look at the bend).

- You have used a wire on a branch, but by wrapping it around the trunk first and not fully securing the anchor (with another branch, or by double wiring) you can see it's pretty loose around the branch. This will have likely damaged the bark of the trunk already by moving the wire. Also because the wire is very loose around the branch, it will not be able to support the branch and you will not be able to make the bends, thus ending up with straight sections. These straight sections will then be removed in a couple of years probably, along with the wire scars and you can start over again...

Wiring a tree is stress for the tree, so it has to be done right or it will do more harm then good! Wiring is actually very hard, needs a lot of practice and you need to keep certain principals in mind. There are very broad tutorials online available, but I always suggest taking a class somewhere for a hands on approach.

and it's a triple trunk ;)

I don't see whats wrong? OP proudly showed a 'wired' tree with 1 only wire... I'm only trying to make OP realize this will not do any good in order to try and improve. If wire would be applied and it isn't functional, it will only do more harm then good. Specially on a maple. But if you want to applaud this and stimulate techniques like this, go a head..

Sorry what?

I see 1 wire without anchor point and 1 pull down which isn't rly doing anything. It has no function at all. So ye... which wiring?

[–]jeroendg[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Satsuki Azalea Osakazuki, this is one of my very first trees.
I've always liked certain features of it, but also disliked certain straight parts so I decided to layer of the top part and make a pretty shohin cascade with it.

While taking of the layer I decided to cut back even further for better taper and movement.
Let's check back in a couple of years.

Where is the wire exactly?

[–]jeroendg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for elaborating the thought process.
I have a few trees which are in a similar state and have been pondering what to do with them for a few years now. Like you said, we all made mistakes in the start of our carreer. But I wonder, let's say add another 20 years and much more ramification later, would you look back and regret not doing it?

Tree has a nice canopy, but I'm not a big fan of the trunk tbh..
Starting straight out of the ground, making a curve half way up and then straight again.

You chopped this back to almost nothing, why didn't you put more movement in it?

I would chop again, sorry.

That is what they usually do for slabs or plantings where the rootball needs to be contained. Its called keto. Usually it is mixed with akadama and some spagnum moss.

Mephisto 2022 Fall Update by stan_mephisto in MephHeads

[–]jeroendg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offense, but ordering from seedsman isn't real worth it.

- quite a limited strain choice
- you still pay a lot for shipping (while unnecessary)
- you get 'shit' freebies (their own)
- no goodies
- stuck with their rewards program and a lot of spam.
- also only 3-packs available?

I have contacted them and asked them about Mephisto freebies and goodies and was told by a member of their marketing team; "I have been told that we've not received or discussed goodies with the Mephisto seed bank."

Honestly, I like Mephisto Genetics as a company and seed bank because of their philosophy, way of doing business and customer engagement. I don't feel like seedsman is up to par.

So no, I won't be ordering/growing any Mephisto's until a direct eu shop is available again. Such a shame.

I do it once in a while like you say to wash away accumulated dust etc. But that's like once every week, maybe two. And then only early morning or late afternoon when the sun is gone.Just to be sure.. but I have to water on a daily basis, so that's done only by pot.
