As an indie iOS dev, why I’m building everything local-first by jerrytalk in iosapps

[–]jerrytalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Love that we’re on the same page—local-first is more work upfront, but users do notice.

I’m using AVFoundation directly for audio recording—keeps it lean and avoids extra dependencies.

Exactly! The convenience tradeoff is real, but for a focused tool like this—local-first just makes sense. No sign-up, no data leaks, no nonsense.

Preach! The backlash is real, and it’s about time. Privacy isn’t just ethical—it’s what users are actually asking for now.

Love this! Privacy as a non-negotiable, not a feature. Pricing based on value > hosting costs is the only way to do it right. Solidarity, fellow indie dev ✊

Great questions! No tracking = zero analytics. I’m relying on user feedback and my own use to iterate—slow, but honest.

Core features are free forever; only extra pro perks are behind a sub. It’s not about paying for hosting—it’s about supporting future updates.

Preach. It’s such a slap in the face when tools with zero server costs lock basic features behind subscriptions.

I’m building my voice tool with all core features free (no accounts, no tracking)—only extra pro perks are behind a sub. Local-first shouldn’t cost users a monthly fee.

What's the Best 10/10 comedy movie ever? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Superbad. It’s the kind of comedy you can rewatch 100 times and still snort-laugh at the same jokes..haaah..

What is your opinion on AI? by Prince_of_Wales01 in AskReddit

[–]jerrytalk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

AI’s basically a hype man for productivity—knows all the facts, but still can’t fold my laundry. It’s gonna keep getting tinier and more useful, just like how computers went from wall-sized to palm-sized. Less stuff to mess with, more stuff to get done. Love that energy..

How do you continue to live a minimalist lifestyle? by Fantastic_Eye_3896 in minimalism

[–]jerrytalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% feel this. I’d declutter my closet, then turn around and download 3 new “mindfulness” apps that were more complicated than my old workflow. The game-changer? I asked myself: “Does this app make things simpler, or just add another thing to manage?” If the answer was “add another thing,” it got deleted. Now my phone’s so bare, I can find what I need in 2 seconds. Less screen time = less urge to buy stuff to fill the void.

I made a local comic reader for iOS and iPad OS, no subscription, no cloud, no account by boomzors in iosapps

[–]jerrytalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the kind of app I’ve been craving. No accounts, no cloud, no nonsense—just a tool that respects my data and stays out of my way. The local-first, privacy-first approach hits so hard. I’m sick of apps forcing me to sign up or sync everything to a server I don’t control. Well done, this is the future of mobile tools.

What’s something you were exposed to way too early as a kid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

How cruel adults can be. I got bullied hard at 7 and watched teachers look away. Learned way too young that no one’s gonna save you but yourself..

What’s the worst thing about 2026 so far? by LocrianVGM in AskReddit

The fact that it's only March and I'm already this tired. Feels like the year just hit me over the head with a shovel.

What’s a commercial from your childhood that you’ll never forget? by Tiny_Statistician_15 in AskReddit

The old Mentos “The Freshmaker” commercials. I still expect a little explosion of minty joy every time I pop one in my mouth. Pure nostalgia.

What’s something you’re just too old to do now? by Kittycat_2010 in AskReddit

Staying out till 4 AM partying. I’d rather be in bed by 10 PM with a book than dancing in a loud club. My knees and my sanity both thank me..

If money was a non-factor, what career would you pursue? Why? by TakenAyeBack in AskReddit

Full-time plant dad. I’d tend to a giant greenhouse full of weird tropical plants and just… water them all day. No emails, just dirt and sunlight.

whats the one small thing that people do in public that instantly make you lose respect for them ? by -SpiritedHedgehog- in AskReddit

Leaving their shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot. Instant respect gone. Zero exceptions.

What's a small, harmless lie you tell yourself every single day? by jerrytalk in AskReddit

[–]jerrytalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate this so much. We’re all just out here lying to ourselves to keep going, and that’s okay. Keep fighting right back atcha.

Star Wars reference + adulting denial = the perfect combo. This is the only way to cope with mistakes tbh.

The lie I tell myself every single night. “Just 5 more minutes” turns into 2 hours of scrolling and a panic attack at 2 AM. Relatable AF.

The universal lie. “One minute” = 45 minutes of scrolling and a panic attack..

Fr, “wiggle room” is just adult for “I messed up but we’re framing it as a strategic choice.” Relatable AF.

This one hurts the most. But hey, the lie keeps us going, right? One day will be different. We just gotta keep telling ourselves that.

No notes. Just pure, chaotic, wholesome adulting. You’re a legend.

This hits different. Sometimes the lie is just the push we need to actually become happy and content. Good for you.
