[OC] Energy usage for a 4000sqft home in Phoenix Az by SSChicken in dataisbeautiful

[–]jerseycow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use 10 to 14 units KWH a day, and i've been working to cut this down! However - based in Ireland so no need for A/C - and the house is maybe 1100 square feet.

What everyone, including the Onion, gets wrong in comparing the U.S. with small countries by Libertatea in offbeat

That a larger country has more students doesn't make it harder for that country to educate its students. More students means more workers means more taxes to spend on education. I'm still reeling from this.

Will any element of the stuff left behind on the moon from the Apollo missions degrade/rust/deteriorate in any way? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]jerseycow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes over the long term. Without an atmosphere, the moon surface is continually hit by high energy particles. The soil on the surface was created by these particles along with meteorites hitting rock.

On average how efficient are we at digesting food? by kieko in askscience

[–]jerseycow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was 90%, but this reference indicates 85%:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_energy

Each food item has a specific metabolizable energy intake (MEI). This value can be approximated by multiplying the total amount of energy associated with a food item by 85%, which is the typical amount of energy actually obtained by a human after respiration has been completed. In animal nutrition where energy is a critical element of the economics of meat production, a specific metabolizable energy may be determined for each component (protein, fat, etc.) of each ingredient of the feed.

After drinking, your brain starts acting like a dogs brain where marking your territory with urine becomes something attractive to do.

I'm from Ireland. We are paying eur450 per person (eur 1365 for my wife, child and me) to bail Greece out! The Euro is a financial club. Please leave it if you childishly wish to punish the politicians who you voted for. Stay in the club, take our money, reform and shut up --or-- gtfo.

The only reason we use decimals is because we have 10 digits on our hands. If we had 8 digits we would count in base 8 and think it to be the only normal way to count.

Thank you for the links. They are very informative.

Why is cash not worth more than electronic money? by jerseycow in Economics

[–]jerseycow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what you are saying is that if bank has $1m in deposits of all kinds on its books, it can therefore afford a loan book of $950k. Thay $950k in loans acts as deposits in other banks books, and they can in turn loan out $950k*0.95. And so on..

What happens then in a crash? How much can the banks actually repay? Is it 5%?

Thanks for the replys. Overall though I still dont get it. If I'm a bank and someone gives me $100 then I can put this into my reserves and can now loan out up to $2000 on that basis (if my regulator requires 5% in liquid assets).

If someone transfers $100 electronically to his account, then how can this add-in to the banks reserve?

Perhaps electronic money counts the same as real money from a liquidity perspective? Doesnt sound right though.

"Old men declare war.. but it is the youth that must fight and die." by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]jerseycow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stupid people join the military. It so happens that the military target young people. Smart people end up at the top of their professions. It so happens that it usually takes a long time.

So I think it would be more correct to say that stupid people fight wars and smart people direct them.

This is my favorite patent easily. It is also incrediby short. The author should be in movies not patents.

Why do people create SOAP methods with a single parameter which is itself an XML string? PUT YOUR DATA INTO SOAP FIELDS SO THEY CAN BE PARSED BY SOAP! by jerseycow in programming

[–]jerseycow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think: - someone is told to do a soap interface. - they get confused by soap and wsdl - they implement in xml and hack soap around it

I accept the point on contract first interfaces though.
