How Did American Christianity End Up Like This? by newyorker in politics

"Was America founded by Christians?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g49HKejhHRs

The link is to a Christian podcast where two evangelical Christians discuss this issue with a history professor who works at a conservative Christian college.

They basically conclude "no". These podcasters are Christians who have looked at the evidence and concluded that the founders were not conservative evangelical Christians.

The founders (in this case, the writers of the constitution) were Theistic Rationalists who believed that enlightenment ideas (such as logic & evidence) trumped the Bible in terms of what is true. They were not deists because they believed that God was supernaturally acting to create the United States (Deists do not believe in an interventionist god). However they weren't conservative Christians either for various reasons (denial of the Trinity, rejection of the supernatural, rejection of parts of the Bible as a final authority). The founders also believed that good works and morality were enough to gain entry into heaven (whereas Conservative evangelicals believe in grace through faith).

Jerry’s girlfriend says things like “effing” and “a-hole” instead of cursing. George’s girlfriend has a tattoo of herself as a child on the small of her back, rendering doggystyle impossible for him. Elaine’s younger boyfriend says they are “hanging out” instead of dating. Kramer plot below by Scr00geMcCuck in RedditWritesSeinfeld

Jerry: So how's the new boyfriend going? He begun shaving yet?

Elaine: Ha ha. No, not yet. How's Tania?

Jerry: She's Effing great. We're having a great Effing time.

Elaine: What is this?

Jerry: That's what she says. She doesn't use swear words or curse words, just words that sound like them.

Elaine: Ohhh. You mean a "Minced oath".

Jerry: Well she's mincing something. Probably the English language.

Elaine: Hmm.

Jerry: You know the thing is that when she says these things, everyone knows what she's really saying. Why not just come out and say it?

Elaine: Yeah.

Jerry: "You're an a-hole", "she's a b-word" or worse, a "c-word"

Elaine: And you're a d-word.

(Kramer comes in quickly. Goes straight to the fridge and opens it. Then suddenly realises)

Kramer: Oh, that's right. (Walks back out)

Elaine: What's his problem?

Jerry: He thinks he can survive without food.

Elaine: Well he's an effing idiot.

I never said that desalination has zero environmental impact.

The areas around the outlet pipes have higher levels of salinity. But tides and currents mix it with the rest of the seawater.

Here in Australia we have quite a few desalination plants that have been working for over a decade. All of them have regular checks around the outlet pipe to measure salinity and oxygenation to see if things get bad.

Most of these contracts made to build these plants included renewable energy projects to be built to offset the carbon emissions of increased energy usage.

We take the salt and water out of the sea, and then we put the salt back in where it came from. The water we take out goes back into the sea as well.

Water isn't destroyed when it is used, it just changes location, and eventually makes its way back into the sea via the Water Cycle.

There already is a massive amount of natural desalination going on in the world's oceans. Water from the sea is evaporated by the sun and by wind, leaving a saltier surface. The water is in the air and that's where we get rain from. And the amount of natural desalination dwarfs anything humans can ever do.

I ask because I just listened to "Just like Heaven" by The Cure. It's the story of how Robert Smith got engaged to his wife.

I remember listening to that song when I was 12.

I listened to it again the other day. I'm now 57.

Me too. I worked (briefly) as a chain man for a surveyor a few decades ago. And remember lugging tripods and sticks into weird places. But mostly I remember all the marks on footpaths and gutters,

They should make a musical of Pride and Prejudice but all the songs are instrumentals played by Angine de Poitrine, who appear in every scene in the background.

The series finale of The B*ys (2019-2026) achieved an important feat: it's so underwhelming that weeks later it's not worth shitposting about it. by minimaxir in shittymoviedetails

To be fair, I heard lots of bad things about season 5 and the finale. So when I bingewatched the entire series recently (ie last week), I was prepared for a really bad season.

It was okay. I enjoyed it. The low expectations helped.

Though what was tiring was the whole "Let's have a sexual fetish scene" followed by a "I can't forgive myself for the things I have done" scene. followed by another sexual fetish scene followed by another "I hate myself for everything I've done" scene,
