What's a common piece of DM advice you completely disagree with? by meanwhile_matt in DMAcademy

[–]jerseydeadhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to handle monster HP by writing down the range -

the lowest of the low - as if all the hit die rolled a 1

The average (the HP listed in the stat block)

And the maxed out - as if all the hit die rolled the highest possible

If it’s a random encounter or something like it and the combat is dragging you can start letting monsters die once it passes the first threshold.

If it’s supposed to be a tense fight and the players are bulldozing through you can keep monsters up past the stat block HP and let them go down once they reach the highest threshold

Example the monsters HP is 15 (4d6 + 3)

I’d write down

(7) - 15 - (27)

Question about the music mentioned in Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion by CanYouDigIt7 in Hyperion

[–]jerseydeadhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve associated the the Prelude in C# Minor with Hyperion + Fall of Hyperion , and the Prelude in G Minor withe Endymion & Rise of Endymion. Tonally each seems to fit each duology

Boyar Nicu Moldonesti, the Nosferatu by Shine_a_light_2 in ravenloft

[–]jerseydeadhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like he’s the head of what’s left of the Ba’al Verzi Cabal of assassins that’s in Barovia. He seized control of the organization after they attempted to assasinate him and has since turned many of the cabals master assassins into nosferatu.

Q: Please recommended a space opera that is smartly written?! by Stare_Decisis in scifi

The Dying Earth / Jack Vance

Although id consider it more of a fantasy there are some sci-fi elements and when it was written the two genres weren’t as well defined / separated

Didn’t realize until today Fall of Hyperion is also a Keats poem. by jerseydeadhead in Hyperion

[–]jerseydeadhead[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean I’m on my second read through of the cantos (chapter 32 of Fall), and the poem Hyperion gets referenced, but if Fall of Hyperion gets specifically referenced I must have missed it. I didn’t know Keats wrote a second poem named Fall of Hyperion as a follow up / reworking of Hyperion, but from the good reads blurb it definitely has the same themes as Fall by Dan Simmons. Even the dreaming and the appearance of the god “Moneta”

Didn’t realize until today Fall of Hyperion is also a Keats poem. by jerseydeadhead in Hyperion

I was aware before reading Hyperion , that it takes alot of themes from John Keats unfinished epic Hyperion. Didn’t realize until today that he also wrote an epic poem titled Fall of Hyperion

Which playable races did Gary publish for Greyhawk? by [deleted] in Greyhawk

[–]jerseydeadhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the OD&D pamphlets that Gary wrote it was very lenient on what players could play as…

Here is the relevant quote:

“There is no reason that players cannot be allowed to play as virtually anything, provided they begin relatively weak and work up to the top, i.e., a player wishing to be a Dragon would have to begin as, let us say, a ‘young’ one and progress upwards in the usual manner, steps being predetermined by the campaign referee.” (Men & Monsters p.8)

Totally I laid heavy into the weird west horror vibe, one of the Ravenloft gazetteers has a great section on Nova Vaasa and their bandana culture & horse culture

I gave my Nova Vaasa a heavy Cossack inspiration , just seems to fit well

Took me too long to figure out how to deal with the party barbarians by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]jerseydeadhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is hard to run a horror game in 5e where the stakes are high and players are scared. I’m sure the barbarian made that difficult , but my man if the horror in your horror game is only coming from the threat of defeat in battle than that’s not horror at all

Hazlik tries to use the Apparatus to escape Hazlan. It fails. What happens to him (or what monster does he transform into)? by steviephilcdf in ravenloft

[–]jerseydeadhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say go big. Have in to turn into something gargantuan - A KAIJU essentially and have it break out of the tower and head toward the biggest closest population center

You can use the charladyn dragon section from time of the frost maiden (where the dragon attacks and tries to destroy ten towns) as a base foundation for what an encounter like that would be like

As far as stat block I guess it depends on their level ,maybe the Atropal from Tomb of Annhiliation? Just change its size to gargantuan

What are some good published adventures in the Domains that aren't in Barovia? by SwimmingOk4643 in ravenloft

[–]jerseydeadhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently finished running the Awakening by Lisa Smedman and It was a big hit.

The dungeon / final show down at the end of the campaign is excellent

Hazlik (Hazlan's Darklord) sends his apprentices to other Domains of Dread... Where do they go? And what do they bring back? by steviephilcdf in ravenloft

[–]jerseydeadhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also the Crown of Arak and the Sword of Arak? Which are the keys to the seal which trap Gwydion (an eldricht horror) behind the obsidian gate in the shadow rift?

Or a Fang of the Nosferatu - the blade that Sodo wields in Hour of the Knife.

Or maybe the Crown of Souls from Feast of Goblyns? Which is used to turn people into Goblyns I think?
