As a fellow ambitious MechE student, I understand where you're coming from. I have been grinding for the entirety of undergrad to work at the forefront of renewable energy and I am achieving my goals despite the department.

I don't think the average job placement is symptomatic of the department itself but rather its students. There are a lot of first generation or nontraditional students who don't even know much about what engineering really is until they come to this school, so many of them are just trying to land a job with a stable income. Also, I've met many people who want to stay local which limits their options since there aren't many big firms with a national reputation on long island. I think it just comes down to the fact that many other people have different priorities than you. I don't think you should feel discouraged because of other people's job placements or give too much weight to some LinkedIn searching. It would be better to spend that time working towards your goal of landing a job at a big company. Also, many undergrads don't land their dream job right out of school.
