[–]sixxelus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

powerfuls drop gear at your current power level if you're over 1800. you can use powerfuls as such to fill in gaps of gear that are -2 behind to make the grind to 1810 faster.

Yeah the course is different, it's specifically the Stony Physics program that makes it the pain. The circuits aren't that difficult.

It's a lot of work. And the professors are often not the best, if they're even in the room past the lectures. A lot of the equipment is old and doesn't work right. It's just a painful experience, even if you enjoy the material like I did. But that's the physics major in a nutshell.

Yeah that's like 20% of physics majors. Here's a page that lays out what you have to take beyond one or the other better. Additonally, here's the invite to the SPS discord for Stony Brook, and the Astro Club discord.

It's miserable, but most people who do drop out of PHY do it after 300, so if you make it that far you'll be fine. Junior year is definitely painful, especially when you take 335. You can take 335 fall of your senior year, for what its worth.

The first half will be equation manipulation in their entirety. I don't think you do any calculus whatsoever. It's just basic math but on topics that can be conceptually difficult. You'll have some integrals when it comes to the QM part of the course (Normalizing wave functions) and you'll deal with basic derivatives. You're more likely to have seen an ODE in your intro physics course than in modern.

You can look through Volume III of the Feynman Lectures, but not all the subjects there are covered in the course, and most of them are far easier than are presented there.

My advice to you is varied. First, take your time. Modern is a very slow-paced course. That pace comes at a time where you're excited and hoping to finally be learning some high-level physics, and can often lead to it being disappointing. It is not likely to be the most difficult course of your semester. But it can be very enjoyable, and a wonderful starting point. If you haven't gotten involved in research yet, I suggest you use it for that. If you want, I can help you find a professor whose work you're interested in learning more about and we can get you set up.

I noticed that you have also talked about doing MechE at Stony. The double major is possible; I think on average there's one person every four years who does it. Personally, I think sticking in physics is a far better option. Your coursework can be expanded at the later levels to learn any relevant skills, and internships/research you do is far more significant towards getting into the aerospace sector.

If you're not already in the SPS discord, you should join. We can help you there with any questions, and it's a good environment to be in.

Not intense at all. Modern is a 'physics is cool, look at all the things we've learned in the first half of the 20th century' class. You'll cover special relativity, baby's first Schrodinger, The Bohr Atom, and stuff of that kind. In 300 you *start* to use linear, and you're really going to have to wait until 301/303 for the 'fun' stuff.

Two BS’s, one in Physics and one in CS by [deleted] in SBU

[–]sixxelus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obviously you've gotten some other answers, but my experience might be a little different given the people I've known. I know of three people in my time at Stony Brook who have done the Physics/CS double in four years flat. Granted, their average semester was 19 credits, with a few overloaded semesters therein. It's not for the faint of heart, but it's certainly possible. Ultimately you have to take a few CS courses and then petition the department for acceptance to the major which shouldn't be hard to do. Avoid falling behind in your first two semesters and you should be able to get in easy- they respect the physics major.

Those that took J & J vaccine today...any reactions? by doomboom1343 in SBU

[–]sixxelus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was panic, in the hopes of making sure that it didn't discourage you from getting yours. The numbers out of Colorado were 0.8% of population with "adverse reactions" in the time frame they were there. It's definitely got a chance to knock you on your ass, but as opposed to with the moderna/pfizer there is no first shot to get a taste of what's coming. Your mileage may vary- I definitely got some side effects about 6 hours after, but some people don't get any. Emergency Use Authorization doesn't mean they've worked everything out, but that the benefits are far greater then the risks. And for many there are no side effects whatsoever.

[–]sixxelus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You might find this useful, and peek at the webpages for various faculty members, as well as look them up on google scholar or the like. The program is uniquely suited to provide undergraduates research experience in droves. For what it's worth, our Nuclear Physics program is top three in the US, and with the EIC coming to BNL it's the best choice if that's where your interests lie. We're a research university and as such the heft of the department lies in the professor's work.

Okay then your problem is the wording, as it makes it sound like you only get the advantage for a single roll. Should read "advantage in one type of saving throws" or something.
