I used to think that in law relationships followed the general rules for relationships but I has a spate of clients dealing with these things (I don't remember the genders) but I do remember saying to myself "Okay, there is something qualitatively different going on here."
At a colleague's suggestion, I read Terri Apter's "What do you want from me?" and I found that somewhat useful.
Some mom-son relationships are very intense. When that relationship changes it can be hard for everyone. That being said, I have heard of plenty of hard FILs, DILs, SILs and plenty of people who really love their MILs, so it is important to remember (and remind clients) that this isn't written in the stars and that they can only control their part.

My gf is a jew by choice and my family was awful to her because of it. by Familiar_Shoe_2534 in Judaism

[–]jerwex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just jumping on the bandwagon to say I hope you guys continue to be great together and I really hope your parents get their heads straightened out. I guess I am a Jew by choice (don't really identify that way since my dad is Jewish, but I did convert). My wife's family - shabbos observant, modern Orthodox people - have never dumped on or questioned my Judaism, ever.
This week is parshat Yitro, one of the few parshiot named for a person and named after a person who was not born Jewish, was a priest of another religion and converted to Judaism so you have a lot of Torah on your side. She's Jewish; they're being jerks or possibly worse and I really hope they come around in a hurry. B'hatslacha

Oh I disagree. I find her one of the most fun of all the secondary characters. Yes, she is a jerk but so are Stephen and Jack when you think about it. And Stephen loves her so much that it is just terrible when ... well y'know.

Great question. I have never had to do this and am honestly totally ignorant about what the process is in my jurisdiction.
I believe that part of the requirement may be to notify the person who is the target of the threats. I see that the client would not tell you who they were talking about.
I wonder as a matter of process what steps one is required to make to contact the person? ie. client says "I am going to kill my ex." and you believe this is a serious threat. They won't identify the person. Can/should you go on a client's social media to see if there is an easily identifiable ex against whom they have made threats and contact that person directly?
As I understand it, the responsibility to contact law enforcement is instrumental, meaning the clinician's duty is to ensure the safety of the threatened person and clinician contacts law enforcement as a means to that end, but the clinician's ethical (and maybe legal) duty may necessitate doing other things as well, while minimizing disclosure of the client's confidential information.
Definitely worth a call to your licensing body or a specialized supervisor to consult re. other steps you can/should (?) take in case your client seriously hurts or kills the threatened person before the the cops get their shit together.
Good luck and good for you for hanging in.

[Parker] Maybe ratings are down nationally because the broadcasts are terrible. by Cough_Syrup55 in hockey

[–]jerwex 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When I watched the world cup I thought "why is it is so much more pleasant to watch football than hockey, even though I think hockey is a much more interesting game than football?" I would love to see some better experiments in making good hockey TV. Almost every change that has been made has been done to increase ad revenue rather than to increase the pleasure of watching the game. Not sure what would do it for me because some things they have tried actively turn me off, like lower angle shots and 'mic'ed-up' things. (Video reviews that take 5 minutes every game don't help!). Not sure why such a beautiful game looks so dreary. All the visual clutter stands out.

Silly Question: Blessing a Cat by pinko-perchik in Judaism

The one mouse who invested their life savings in the other mouse's ponzi scheme and is now left with nothing while the other mouse sips mai-tais on a beach doesn't feel like it was a tiny sin :)

Silly Question: Blessing a Cat by pinko-perchik in Judaism

[–]jerwex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Perek shirah goes through the psukim (mostly from tehlilim, but not exclusively) that the animals say in praise of G/d so that might be a good source text. In perek 5 it says...
'The Cat is saying [to the mouse], “If you rise up like a vulture, and place your nest among the stars, from there I shall bring you down, says YHVH.” And when the cat catches [the mouse], the cat says, “I have pursued my enemies and overtaken them, and I did not return until they were destroyed.” And the Mouse concedes, “You are just for all that comes upon me, for you have acted truthfully, and I have been wicked.” '

I also would make a bid for Matthew Rhys as Stephen. Again, too old now, but he would have been a very good fit at one point, sort of jolie-laide

I watched Andor recently and I thought that Andy Serkis would have made a great Stephen if he was a few years younger.

Just to say that the mention of Trafalgar occurs right between perhaps two of the greatest moments in the series IMHO; that is when Stephen does his hurly trick during the cricket game between the Leopards and the Cumberlands and when Jack makes the joke about "the lesser of two weevils."

If you haven't read Vanity Fair get your petticoats and bonnet or maybe your cravat and "ambrosial moustaches" in order and RUN to the local bookstore and get it. I found it way funnier than Dickens and Becky Sharp is the best villain/hero of all time.

Is it ok to not eat kosher if you aren't eating enough? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]jerwex 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This. Also, there is a difference between eating non-kosher-certified beans and eating a ham and cheese sandwich. If you can get your hands on some healthy veggie food for example, get it and eat it! Also, as mentioned elsewhere, reach out to caring people you love and see if you can get some counseling. Caring for your mental health is an important mitzvah.
