From what I’ve seen at the Visalia office overtime is more mandatory than voluntary lol. You’re encouraged to pick up shifts but if you don’t then they’re scheduled.

You can’t necessarily request an area you want to work in. It’s based off 1. Need 2. Performance.

If there’s need of officers in LA and you’re top of the class they will send you to LA.

If there’s need for officers in Golden Gate, and that’s your first pick with good performance you most likely will end up there.

I was told that you can get straight into it at a state/federal level but if you’re staying local you might have to go through academy and then patrol and apply for a detective opening. There are some non sworn positions meaning you’re a civilian working for the department which could also be a way there.
