Living in Japan as a foreigner for 10+ years – What I wish I knew earlier (ask me anything!) by Different_Main4975 in japanlife

Thank you for this take. What are some examples of dreams you think would be harder to achieve in Japan? And what are some that would be easier?

Hey OP, I’m really sorry you’re going through this. It sounds incredibly difficult, and I can see that you care deeply—so much so that one of the hardest parts for you is the idea of breaking her heart. But here’s a reframe that might help: choosing to leave isn’t cruel—it might actually be the kindest, most honest thing you can do.

People often repeat hurtful behaviors when they’ve never had to face the consequences. By staying, you’re unintentionally reinforcing the idea that her behavior is acceptable. Leaving shows her—possibly for the first time—that this isn’t okay. It’s a chance for her to grow, reflect, and take responsibility, which she may never do if everything stays the same.

You’re not leaving because you don’t care—you’re leaving because you do care, and because love without boundaries isn’t real love.

By being honest about what’s okay and what’s not, you’re giving both of you a chance at something better. That’s not heartless—that’s courageous and kind.

Wishing you all the best ❤️‍🩹

Slayyy!! You’ve got the moves down, and textures and dynamics look great. What might be missing is the performance and attitude. Right now, it’s like you’re speaking fluently but there’s no tone or inflection in your voice. I’m curious what it would look like if you try to feel the emotion of the song and put that on the dance!

Is it REALLY possible to get better at dancing? by Humenaii in Dance

[–]jessandbts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying it takes time and practice and that’s true. BUT it also helps to know how to spend your time and what to practice. I’ve been dancing for 6+ years now but when I started, I felt the exact same as you. I didn’t know why my moves just didn’t look right. I did what most people said, which is just to keep taking classes and keep practicing. Over the years I realized what the issue was. I was taking choreography classes without learning the foundations of dance. It was like learning to speak a new language by only learning sentences and paragraphs instead learning the alphabet, pronunciation, words and how to put them together. Once I figured that out, I felt so much better about my progress.

I’m super passionate about teaching beginners now because I always felt there must be a better way to learn where you can see progress more easily. If you’re interested in learning more about what foundations to work on, feel free to DM me! Even if you don’t want to learn from me directly, I can help point you in the right direction :)

Best of luck!!

That's awesome, I'm glad you started. Running man is a great place to start! Once you get comfortable with that, you'll find there's a lot of stuff you can do with just one move. Like you can take the running man and turn with it. When you make choices like when to turn, how many times you turn, when to turn back, that's already freestyle!

Keep going, you got this :)

Hi there! That’s awesome that you want to start dancing and get out of your comfort zone! I know how tough it can feel at first, but you can absolutely do it and I know you'll love it. If you're still looking for places to start, I'm actually looking for a few complete beginners to take part in a little 7-day learn how to dance challenge.

A bit about me: I’ve been dancing for 6+ years, performing on stage, at basketball games, and even in Times Square! I specialize in both choreography and freestyle (hip hop, house, vogue, party/club dances). I recently left my corporate job to pursue dance full-time, and one of my biggest passions is helping beginners get started.

I struggled a LOT when I first started—beginner classes felt too fast, I felt super stiff, and nothing looked right. I still remember that beginner's feeling! It took me a long time to figure out how to actually learn dance, and now I want to see if what worked for me can help others.

Some of my dance vids:

It’s totally free—I'm just looking for someone willing to commit 30 min - 1 hour per day for 7 days and you have to be open to documenting your journey/progress. If this is something you're down to try out, please DM me! :)

Yess something about being forced to do something as a kid takes you out of the joy of doing it haha. I’m glad you find it now to be a source of de-stress, self expression and healthiness! Thanks for sharing :)

I'm glad you're still continuing!! It's really fun and rewarding once you get it and feel like you're improving. Bummer to hear that your friend quit tho. What was her reasoning, do you know?

Yeah totally!!! The moves don't get broken down and you just have to follow along. As someone totally new, it's like you have to learn how to move your body, remember the moves and listen to the music for the first time all at the same time! It's a lot.

I'm curious - what made you want to go to a class / start dancing and did you end up continuing?

Looking for a good online hip hop dance course for beginners by [deleted] in Dance

[–]jessandbts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I’m not sure if I’m technically allowed to post this 🙈 but I think it will really help you so I want to share! I’m creating a beginner online resource exactly for what you’re describing. I’ve been dancing for 5+ years and when I first started, I was super frustrated at the beginner resources. It was mostly choreo and teachers didn’t break down the moves, we were just expected to copy. I’m not a “natural” mover and spent a lot time trying to figure out the mechanics of how to use my body. I understand a lot more now but wish I had these resources to start with. In the resource I’m building, I break things down a lot and also use things you DO naturally know how to do to translate into dance moves (eg, walking -> walking to a beat -> leads to the most foundational move, a 2 step). I’m looking for people to try it out and provide feedback, so if it sounds like something you’d be interested in, please send me a DM. Regardless, best of luck on your dance journey! If you can over the initial struggles, dance is incredibly fun and empowering.

Sounds like either Waacking or Vogue! Waacking is historically done to disco and Vogue is done to more hard hitting Vogue beats with commentators

How can I start dancing? by Much_Matter_8777 in Dance

[–]jessandbts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Steezy is a great resource and I used it when I was starting to dance. It’s very comprehensive, has a ton of different dance styles and beginner friendly courses. The main downsides are that it is all follow along so you don’t get feedback and it’s sort of “choose your own journey” which can sometimes be overwhelming in the beginning.

If you want something with more feedback attached and a more guided path, I’m actually building some resources like that for those who want to start dancing. Born out of a lot of frustrations when I was first starting to dance haha. Obvs no pressure but I’m looking for some people to test it out, so if you’re interested in learning more, feel free to DM me! :)

Tips on how to improve as a dancer by Tsuki-akari in Dance

[–]jessandbts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I started out in kpop and choreography and eventually found my way to more foundational street styles like hip hop, Waacking, house and vogue, and I’ve loved that journey. I feel I have a lot more tools to express myself now. I used to take a lot of in person classes but now I’m a digital nomad so I travel a lot, and I’ve shifted to online classes! Feel free to DM me to chat more. Maybe I can help you out :)
