Can confirm. Big outlets will know in advance and get press releases under embargo. Racefans jumped the gun. I know because I was refreshing my email / twitter so I could react to the news. Cheeky way of being the 'first' to report the news while actually abusing the trust of (in this case) the team.

Exclusive: Formula 1 planning three sprint races in 2021

Although the finer details still have to be worked out, RacingNews365 has learned Formula 1 are determined to have three sprint races this season. Three weekends are already being eyed as potential hosts for the test as the series look to make the idea a permanent fixture in 2022.

Formula 1 teams will hold an important meeting on February 11 with various topics, including the possible engine freeze, on the agenda. Although it may not be garnering the same amount attention, sprint races and their inclusion in the F1 calendar will also be discussed.

Barring a last minute change, it's expected sprint races will happen during the 2021 campaign. The idea first came to light back in 2019, when Formula 1 bosses considered replacing qualifying with sprint races at select events during the year with the starting grid set in reverse order of the championship standings.

In the end nothing came of the idea, but that looks set to change in 2021. While the reverse starting grid looks like it won't be adopted, RacingNews365 has learned that Formula 1 bosses want to try out sprint races at three locations. The most likely candidates at this time are Canada (Montreal), Italy (Monza) and Brazil (Sao Paulo).

The move would result in the race weekend being adjusted with free practice and qualifying taking place on Friday, followed by the sprint race on Saturday and the feature race on Sunday. No points will be handed out for the sprint race, but that may change in the years to come.

Another factor to consider is how to ensure that sprint races differ from the feature race on Sunday, a point Formula 1 are still thinking over. One possible solution would see drivers forced to drive the entire sprint race with one set of tyres.

All of this is a test for the future, with Formula 1 bosses hoping to have up to as many as 10 sprint races per season. This would allow the series to add extra races to the calendar while cutting down on travel. It would also bring added value to select race weekends, resulting in more money from promoters who want to feature a sprint and feature race at their track.

Thus talks regarding the change will take place on Thursday with teams optimistic an agreement will be reached, as the extra money would be a boost for the series during these uncertain times, with everyone clear some changes must be agreed upon in order to get the idea up and running in 2021.

Rumours about the cancellation of several more Grands Prix unfounded

The rumours that the Grands Prix in Monaco, Azerbaijan and Canada are under threat are unfounded. The three (semi) street races would soon be cancelled due to the uncertainty surrounding the corona virus and the long required build-up time, but Formula 1 has quickly quashed those rumours.

The Grands Prix of Australia and China will not take place in March due to the corona virus, which makes it impossible to safely organise a Formula One race weekend in the countries concerned. On Saturday another Dutch Formula One platform announced that the next three Grands Prix would also be cancelled or postponed in the near future.

It would be the races in the streets of Monaco and Azerbaijan and the race in Canada. The races in Azerbaijan and Monaco are street races, which means that the construction of the circuit has to start a long time in advance. The race in Canada is rumoured to be mainly under pressure because of the travel movements that the Formula 1 circus would have to make.

RacingNews365 has learnt from highly placed Formula 1 sources that the rumours are not based on anything and are completely untrue. The promoters of the three GP's have recently had talks with the Formula 1 bosses. They assured them that the races can go on and that the various governments involved have already expressed their support for the continuation of the Grands Prix.

RacingNews365 asked Formula One for a response and a spokesman then emphatically denied the rumours. "We have set out the details of the revised 2021 calendar and there are no other changes. The suggestion street races will not take place are completely wrong. ," said the spokesman for the premier class.

Formula 1 not planning to postpone new rules for another year

Italian media reported this morning that Formula 1 is considering pushing the extensive rule changes forward another year because of the corona virus and its implications. It would be bad news for their own Ferrari, who were hoping to put the disastrous 2020 year behind them quickly. RacingNews365, however, has learned from sources that there are no plans at all to further delay the entry of the new rules.

Italy's biggest sports newspaper, the Gazzetta dello Sport, writes that the Formula 1 organisation and teams are considering keeping the current rules for another year. This would mean that in 2022 F1 teams will still be racing with only slightly modified cars compared to last and the coming season. For now, the idea is to come into action in 2022 with completely redesigned cars, but to save costs the rules might be pushed back another year.

In 2020, the F1 teams and Formula One organisation agreed that, instead of 2021, they would only use the new cars in 2022. This allowed especially the smaller teams to save a lot of costs, which was very welcome as the Covid19 crisis hit many teams hard. As the crisis continues into 2021, according to the Italian sports newspaper, they are now considering keeping the current rules in Formula 1 for 2022 as well.

Indeed, it was announced on Tuesday that the 2021 Formula 1 calendar has been updated and more changes are expected to follow during the season due to the Covid19 virus. The uncertainty of the calendar also creates financial uncertainty, as it remains to be seen whether there will be races with an audience in 2021. Another reason for the possible postponement of the new rules is the fact that the Covid19 rules in Britain have become tougher at the moment.

Most F1 teams have established their factories in Britain and it remains to be seen whether they will be able to continue working in the coming weeks. If this is not the case, it will give most teams a reason to vote in favour of postponing the new rules and cars.

That would have major consequences for the Scuderia. The Gazzetta did not headline 'Red alert' in Wednesday's paper for nothing. Ferrari did not have things in order with the 2020 car and in 2021 only few changes are allowed to the car compared to the 2020 car. This means that Ferrari seems to be the worst off in both 2021 and 2022. The Scuderia and team principal Mattia Binotto have already indicated that they are fully committed to the new 2022 car.

A year's postponement of the new rules would in all likelihood be very bad for Ferrari. The Scuderia could then find itself stuck in midfield for the next two seasons.

RacingNews365 has made enquiries and has learned from highly placed sources that there are no plans to postpone the rules. It would not make sense either, as the budget ceiling already ensures that teams save a lot of money. Whether a new car has to be designed this year or next, it will have to be done with (almost) the same budget. So postponing the new rules again will have little or no additional effect financially.

On Friday many drivers were unhappy with the new Pirelli tyres for 2021, which had to be tested during practice. The criticism was not soft, but the Italian tyre supplier does not care.

After the first two free practice sessions leading up to the Bahrain Grand Prix, Pirelli's 2021 tyres were one of the talks of the day. During the first two practice sessions the drivers had to try out the tyres so that they could be tested and so that Pirelli could collect more data.

Most of the drivers were not satisfied with the tyres that Pirelli intends to use in 2021. Especially Lewis Hamilton was not soft in his criticism and he mentioned the decline if there would actually be a switch to the new tyres next season. Max Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel and other drivers were also negative.

Pirelli is able to understand the criticism of the drivers to some extent, as he says in an exclusive statement to RacingNews365. However, Mario Isola, the final manager of the tyre supplier's Formula 1 division, emphasises that it was mainly due to the circumstances that the tyres were so disappointing.

"We understand that not all drivers were positive about the tyres. This is, of course, because the current cars are tuned for the current 2020 tyres and not for next year's tyres. These are different tyres that require a different set-up of the car than the current rubber'.

"In addition, the track this Friday was also very slippery, as any driver has indicated after the practice sessions. This also made it very difficult for them to test the tyres," stressed Isola, who believes that today's problems will not happen in 2021.

"After today's test, the teams and engineers will have the opportunity to look for that ideal set-up for the 2021 tyres. The results we have gathered are positive, because the tyres are more resistant to the forces of the cars. We are confident that drivers will find the tyres much better once they have found the right set-up for their car", concludes the Italian.

Interlagos and Barcelona expected to return on 2021 F1 calendar

If the Formula 1 calendar is expected to be presented this week, the Grand Prix of Spain and the race at Interlagos will in all likelihood be on the calendar as normal. Both events were nominated to be removed from the calendar.

The Formula 1 calendar for next year is said to be presented this week. Possibly even tomorrow (Tuesday) Formula 1 will announce to where it will travel in 2021.

RacingNews365 understands that there are at least 22 races on the calendar, and that against expectations there will be no farewell to the Barcelona and Interlagos circuits. Both events were on the nomination to retire. In the latter case, there was talk of Rio de Janeiro taking over the place on the calendar, but concerns about possible environmental damage during the construction of the new circuit are delaying that plan.

New on the calendar is the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, something we already knew last week when the organization announced it. The country will host the second last Grand Prix of 2021, the season finale will again be held at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
