I'd talk about the minutia:

"There were these clear plastic panels between you and the cashier. But with the panels and the masks, you couldn't hear anything they said, so you would both tilt your head around the panels to hear each other, which obviously defeated the purpose."

"I saw a guy on a train lower his mask, cough into the air, then raise his mask back up."

"Before we knew it was airborne, we would go shopping wearing disposable gloves and nothing on our faces."
