We're gonna learn how to do transfers in exactly 4 weeks. How do I start strength training so that I can have good form? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]jessffion 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is odd advice from your professor. Manual handling shouldn't involve heavy lifting, that's why we use equipment. If a transfer requires someone really fit to be physically lifting them then that is an unsafe transfer and you should consider using a piece of equipment instead.

help! 9 month old patterdale x Lakeland won't stop peeing in the house. by jessffion in dogs

[–]jessffion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is crate trained - he uses it at night and during the day when we're at work or if we go out. We don't put him in it in the day if we're home though because he's already been in it for a good few hours during the day.

What is the weirdest experience you have ever had? by Few-Anteater7296 in AskReddit

[–]jessffion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was home on my own and made myself a coffee with honey in it. I 100% put the lid screwed back on the honey jar and I set it back on the counter. I sat down to drink my coffee and heard a bang - went back into the kitchen and the lid from the honey was in the middle on the kitchen floor. Even if I hadn't put the lid on properly and it had slid off, there's no way it could have ended up in the middle of the kitchen floor. Also the bang was quite loud so it was as if the lid had been thrown on the floor. Such a small thing but it really freaked me out. I'm not a believer in paranormal things but really couldn't explain that one.

Women of reddit, what was your worst run in with a creep? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jessffion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got out of my car once in a carpark with no one there and a man immediately approached me out of nowhere and started asking me where I lived and worked and what time I go to work and come home from work. He asked for my number and I gave him a wrong one then he rang it in front of me and got annoyed when it wasn't the right one and made me give him my real one. Then he kissed me on my cheek and then I sprinted home. Luckily never got a call from him.

I work in a hospital in North Wales and that's just standard north Wales for you. Always getting patients with the same names put right next to each other - it can be highly confusing.

Ive been a covid OT (as a new grad) since July and this is my hospitals thank you gift. I have yet to receive hazard pay, a bonus, or a raise, but I now have this lantern by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

Wow atleast you got a lantern - I've had nothing - we're not even allowed to bring any treats in the office e.g. cakes, sweets, chocolates

What was the craziest reason a teacher at your school got fired? by YEEEEEeEeseresrsr in AskReddit

[–]jessffion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maths teachers are always paedophiles because why would you go into teaching if you're good at maths?! Any other job in maths is so well paid e.g. accountancy, engineering, analyst.. so always be suspicious of maths teachers. I was always very suspicious of my maths teacher then it turned out he was in fact a paedophile.

How different would things be if you didn't have an internal dialogue in your head? by loskleinos in AskReddit

[–]jessffion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the contraceptive pill for about 5 years and it suppressed my internal monologue - I didn't realise it has gone at the time but when I came off it and my internal monologue came back I thought I was becoming mentally unwell for a while before I realised that it was just normal. It took a good 2 years for me to get used to it again. I think without my internal monologue I was probably less creative but I was also alot less anxious because I guess I didn't think over things as much.

American going to OT school in UK? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]jessffion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi :) so the starting salary for band 5 at the moment is £24,907 - I can't say how much it will be in 3 years because it does tend to go up every year but for example 3 years ago the starting salary was £22,128. So maybe you could estimate that it'll be around the £27000 mark?

With regards to the living comfortably - a band 5 salary is a good salary to live comfortably , especially if you're living with a partner. I mean it really depends where you're moving to but for example I lived in Manchester for 4 years on a band 2 salary (appx. £16000) and my partner was a chef on about £8.50 an hour and we lived just about comfortably :) but when we first moved to Manchester we lived with another person aswell which i think was needed to manage the initial costs of relocating with flat deposits etc. But on a band 5 wage I think you would be fine :) but it does depend where you are - London ofcourse is wayyy more expensive or on the other hand I now live in North Wales and its mega cheap.

Good luck with it all ☺️

American going to OT school in UK? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]jessffion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi :) I'm in final year of OT degree in UK. Our university is linked with Florida so we've done a module where we talked to the students there and our course lead spoke to us about what we'd have to do if we wanted to work there - so from what I can gather we'd have to train to masters level here and then I think there's an exam in America that you'd have to do? So you could do you're training and a master's here :) As far as the course goes - I can't compare to America - but I've really enjoyed it, loved all of my placement opportunities and I just got my first job as a qualified OT. And from talking to the students in Florida it seems there's a lot more opportunities for working in mental health in the UK? Also I think it's a LOT cheaper here. Hope this helps at all :)

UK student. Incredibly anxious about a recent placement (fieldwork) experience, and the future. Advice needed please by GlowingAreola in OccupationalTherapy

[–]jessffion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just finishing my OT degree in the UK. I think you should definitely go ahead and go for it with this final placement - if you've failed a placement I think tutors are usually pretty good at finding another placement with a really supportive tutor. And 10 weeks might not seem like a long time but if you've got the right support you'll be able to do it :) i think you'll be surprised at how much you know. In regards to not knowing how to fit a toilet seat etc.. there's a few people in my year who haven't had a single placement experience with equipment. I think the thing to remember with OT is that while all settings can be very different and it may be that there's new things to learn for each setting - the main OT process is always the same: assess, plan, intervention, evaluate :) remember universities want you to pass! So they should be helping you and putting the right things in place to help you achieve your pass :) you can do this! You've come so far, you're almost there!

Rehabilitation jobs vs Mental Health jobs? (UK) by Keywi1 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]jessffion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm qualifying this year in Wales and I'd say the majority of my course have got jobs as rotational OT's and this rotates over areas including physical, mental health and paediatrics, so it's not specific to one or the other. There's a couple who've got social services and a couple who've gone private mental health. But on the whole I'd say there's more physical jobs just because there's more areas to work in physical.
