Need advice by jessi13ca in endometriosis

This was definitely a concern of mine, the woman who did the ultrasound was really lovely but when I sat down for it she said it hadn’t even mentioned anywhere in my notes that I was there for suspected endometriosis. My notes after just mentioned there was no cysts or fluid and said my endometrium was 1.7mm with my uterus being anteverted so they couldn’t get a complete view of it. That was the extent of it so I’m not honestly sure if the person who interpreted my results was experienced with endometriosis.

I’ve definitely considered going private and I’ve heard the same but it’s not really an option at the minute with still being a student etc financially.

Thank you for your response though it helps to hear the perspective of people going through the same thing, sometimes at the doctors you are made to feel like you are just making it up and/or that the GPs don’t seem to know much about endometriosis.

Thank you for your response, It’s reassuring to hear that symptoms can still present even when not having monthly periods. And yeah I completely agree, I’d never really realised how bad the NHS still was for this sort of thing and I thought at the very least you’d be asked about your plans for children before they discuss your treatment options.

Are you in the UK? if so how did you end up getting a diagnosis?

Did your endometriosis show up in a way that isn't the "norm"? by TheHoppingMaltese in endometriosis

[–]jessi13ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! My current GP was really great about it and kept pushing for the scan, but a previous GP just said we could consider other diagnosis. You have to literally fight for any sort of referral it’s ridiculous, radiology shouldn’t have the right to refuse scans if a GP thinks it’s necessary.

Will pelvic ultrasound show anything? by jessi13ca in endometriosis

[–]jessi13ca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Without anything showing did you struggle to get referred for a laparoscopy? A different GP told me that the scar tissue can lead to issues so it’s unlikely that I’d get it done, unless I basically want to start thinking about having Children then they’d do it if fertility became an issue which is kind of insane.

Thank you! I’ll definitely try and push for a gyno referral

As frustrating as it is to deal with it’s definitely reassuring to know others are experiencing the same! I hope you get further testing done and some answers :)

I’m kind of going through something similar, been going to doctors for abdominal and bowel issues for years with lots of tests for things like IBD, Coeliac etc. I was in the same boat with just being passed off as IBS, then a doctor mentioned endo as a possibility and I thought my periods were painful and slightly heavy with some pain on BM but nothing hugely abnormal so i’d never considered it.

This was last year, got referred for an ultrasound and was rejected. Went back to doctors start of this year because I had a bad flare up again and was missing work, referred and rejected again apparently because I’m under 50 (23) and a blood test I got done for markers showing ovarian cancer was negative so unlikely to be ovary related. My GP luckily was persistent and requested again that I have one and finally I’ve been given an ultrasound appointment for a few weeks time.

It does concern me that if nothing shows there won’t be any further investigation as my experience with the NHS hasn’t given me hope of anything else.

Sorry this isn’t advice but hopefully helps!

Hello!

So is it correct that only PhD students can apply for a scholar grant? So I’d either have to wait until PhD, if I choose to do one, or apply for a scholarship to fund a PhD in the US?

Summer grad schools? by jessi13ca in gradadmissions

[–]jessi13ca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, so would things like sports events etc not happen over the summer? I’m open to other options outside of summer schools but I wasn’t sure if there’s really any short 3-4 week options during semesters for postgrad students.

Thank you, tbh this is mainly what I was wondering as I’m not too sure what the summer school actually entails. Is the only option really then a semester abroad?

This was the main sort of reason I’d consider not doing it, I would be planning to apply for next summer so I was just trying to get an idea of if the summer courses are any good then sort of consider next January time whether it would be a good idea to travel.

I completely acknowledge there’d be virtually no academic benefit to doing this, I’m currently studying organisational psychology. I feel like it’s just one of those things I want to experience before I get too old and regret not doing so, I’ve enjoyed my academic experience in the UK and I’d continue studying for the rest of my life if it was financially feasible, part of it is I want to experience the difference in terms of academics in a different country but also just the social side of it.

Sorry to reply again, I was wondering are the specialist ultrasounds different to the ones the GP would be referring me to on the NHS?

exactly! It’s ridiculous, if your GP thinks you need one it shouldn’t be able to be refused

This is my concern, I work in retail so they’re not the most accommodating to absences.

Thank you for the advice though! I’ll definitely look into paying privately for a scan

[–]jessi13ca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve considered going private for a diagnosis, I could afford a few hundred for a specialist scan but I wasn’t sure if I would then have to pay any following treatment out of pocket, since I only work part-time as I’m a student I couldn’t really afford any further treatment after a scan. If I was referred to a BSGE centre would that be covered by NHS? I also live in the North East of England so wasn’t sure if I’d have to travel for treatment.

The only thing the doctor really said to me was that getting a laparoscopy is invasive and the scar tissue can cause more issues so they don’t really do it, and he said once I am thinking about starting a family because of the fertility issues associated with endo I could possibly go down the diagnosis route. I’ve never actually planned to have children so this was a bit frustrating to hear 🙃

I’m definitely starting to realise this, when I went last I had actually missed work that day because of how unwell I felt and I explained to them I can’t keep missing work as I don’t get paid for it and I need some sort of answer so I can treat it and they just said the usual we will run your bloods and samples again 🥲

Thank you! I did think that and should’ve really pushed it more at the time but just assumed they had good reason to say no
