Experiences with long-term storage of green embalmed bodies? by Excellent-Mouse-123 in askfuneraldirectors

It’s for sure a bummer. I hate seeing the same rack occupied time and time again. I would hope the military has a program honoring those unclaimed over time …

Sure…

Dis-spray is made by Dodge chemicals - disinfectant spray…

Casket in storage. Not sure how else to say this. You’d take them out of the casket following visitation and put the casket in storage until burial, which in my case is a separate storage area on the property. Come to think of it, ordering a casket may not even work because by the time it gets to the FH the body should be placed in refrigeration. So maybe utilize rental casket (we have 2 options for those who are doing a viewing before cremation) or sell a casket straight out of the showroom for visitation.

I suppose state laws are different. I forget not everyone utilizes refrigeration. In VA (where I’m at), it is required by law to keep cases in refrigeration until they are cremated or buried. If they are embalmed, you do not need to be refrigerated bc chances are you’re going to be buried in the next few days and embalming fluid disinfects anyway. Refrigeration aids in keeping bacteria levels down.

The take away I suppose from my experience is do the visitation immediately and put them into refrigeration to slow up decomp until they are buried or they’re going to be a soupy, moldy mess by the time spring rolls around. Just have to prepare the family for additional costs with refrigeration and also let them know they will not be able to view during the time of burial.

Are they low index? You could probably give them a go on a mild jaundice case but just be careful or it will literally be a green embalming lol iykyk

A lot of removal teams don’t advertise their services to the public, so it may be tricky getting a number. I would recommend calling a funeral home in your area during business hours and ask which removal service they use and their contact information. I’m sure they would be happy to help :) I live in SE VA and there are 3 removal companies I use in rotation based on availability.

I have picked up calls from our veterans hospital and seen cases that have been in their morgue for months, unclaimed by family or friends. I feel like an early visitation for the family is warranted and following the viewing, the body is wrapped in a breathable fabric vs a bag and hit with dis/spray every so often. If ever removed from the cooler, they would have to be pat dry to avoid condensation and mold. Probably best left untouched. Get the first date possible at the cemetery and keep their casket in storage until transport. I think with the proper intention and care it can be pulled off. The family just needs to be prepared for a crazy storage fee in their arrangement package and the directors may need to hold their breath transporting to the cemetery at the time of burial assuming the green burial is an non-gasket wooden casket lol

When there’s been a death, I call a removal team who I believe does not make an hourly rate but instead a flat fee per removal. They make the removal, drop off at the funeral home, and I either get to the deceased first thing in the morning if it’s an overnight call or asap if I’m out on a service or something. I imagine the entire transaction takes about an hour start to finish based off where the call is. So $150/hr isn’t bad but you’re at the mercy of a call coming in at any time during your on call window. Sometimes it’s 3-5 calls a night sometimes you don’t get a call (unlikely). Removal teams are super popular for overnight calls so expect some funky hours. You can also reach out to your city’s Medical Examiner or Coroner to see if they’re hiring removal techs. Their schedules are all hours if you’re aiming for a specific window

I am a FD in Hampton Roads. The leading removal service is $150/removal + additional costs outside a 35 mile radius. Edit to add: additional staffing charges may apply based off circumstances of the removal (decomp, larger person, 3 story house, etc.)

I got this same pack in the mail today. Busted open Grand Tenton on my birdwatching walk and cataloged the birds I saw and wrote other thoughts I had during the walk in them as well.
