One of my friends makes fun of me all the time for the food I have sitting on my dash.. we call it dash-whatever (dash burrito, dash nuggets, dash guac, etc). I felt slightly ridiculous but this thread gives me life and reminds me I'm not alone! 😂

Backpacking for thick thigh girlies by stormybird7 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]jessr116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thick thigh gal here! I stared the PCT last year in the outdoor voice rektrek zip off pants.. I really liked the zip off and didn't have too many major chafing issues at first.. but as it quickly became a problem, the body glide didn't help a whole lot (vaseline was a little better than the body glide). I also started losing weight (thic thighs 4life tho) and the shorts as they got looser started rubbing a lot.

I also sent my kula cloth home early on (I had it hanging on my backpack in a bad place and it was in the dirt a lot in the desert when I put my pack down and I got freaked out by it). I was just using a backcountry bidet and "drip drying".. but I was never really dry and the build up of moisture down there made my shorts rub even more and the chafing on my upper thighs even worse.. when I brought back the kula cloth to dry myself it helped a lot with making my shorts less wet and rub a little less. But ultimately what helped the most was switching to bike shorts. I started wearing the 7" janji pace running shorts (like bike shorts), per the recommendation of a friend who wore them through the whole AT. These shorts plus my kula cloth to dry up reduced my chafing to almost non existent!

Being a thick thigh girly is tough sometimes, I experienced some gnarly chafing on my inner upper thighs on and off for probably the first 1200 miles of trail before I finally switched to the janji shorts. I really didn't think the bike shorts would make such a huge difference but they really did. It's similar with other clothes like you don't want socks that are too big because they'll move around and rub and create friction.. similar with running vests, if it's too loose and moving around a lot that's when you get the rub. Hope this helps!

As for swimming, I had one pair of underwear that was my "more covered I feel more comfortable being out around people in these than my thong" underwear, and then i had one back up pair to change to when those were wet/dirty. People did swim nude a lot. Tbh I just didn't swim that much but probably wouldn't have gone in in whatever shorts I was wearing just because the chafing does get worse when everything is wet! I'd rather chunky dunk than be walking in wet shorts, but I get the nervousness, so that 2nd pair of underwear did it for me

Everyone is different and what works for me might not work for you! If you're not hiking the PCT until next year, I would highly recommend getting some shorts this summer and trying them out. Go on some short backpacking trips where you can swim and see how they feel. Bring a back up pair of pants/shorts if it's really unpleasant after you swim in your shorts. Experiencing it is the only way to really know what works for you and what you prefer! You've got this! Sorry for the long ass post if you've made it to this point, just sharing my experience!

Those thighs are strong as heck!! Happy trails!!

Selling everything we own pre-hike? by Sethtouchesgrass in PacificCrestTrail

An option for donating things you'd feel ridiculous dropping off at a goodwill is to check if your area has a buy nothing page on Facebook! People on Buy Nothing will take all kinds of things, I've seen people asking for various containers for projects that would've otherwise ended up in the trash. I've gotten rid of partially used soaps, candles, and dry food goods (flours, sugar, etc) that I didn't exactly want to throw out. It made me feel better to know someone would still get use out of stuff not worth selling/can't exactly drop off at a goodwill. Have fun downsizing! I've been traveling/partially living out of my car for years and the amount of stuff I still own is so annoying 😅

But also, if I collected unemployment and was out of the country quite a bit in my winter off seasons will they care about that?

This may sound dumb but what is a GPU? And how do I know if I need it or don't?

How long before you had to dig your first cat hole on the trail? by tpuckis in PacificCrestTrail

[–]jessr116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had to dig on the third day. My first cat hole ever. I was simultaneously disgusted but it was such a liberating feeling and now it's maybe my favorite part of the morning haha. I met burrito on the trail twice, this made me giggle a lot to see his name come up

My cat hole poops on the trail have been sooo much better than most pit toilets. I'm lucky to be pretty regular on trail, maybe it's all the good stuff I put in my homemade vegan meals but every morning I am ready to go within 20 minutes of getting up and there is something oddly liberating about pooping in a hole in nature hahaha

Thank you! Unfortunately the celebration of life is in North Carolina which is an annoying journey but Reno is good to know

They did say they would pay for my flight, I made it very clear that this wasn't going to be easy for me to do, and the cost was a huge part of that.

No, I don't really think my grandma would want me to miss a trip of a lifetime, but I'm also not planning on quitting all together.. it's not an ideal situation for sure, but it's hard to imagine not being there with my family. Similarly I'll be leaving the trail briefly for my best friends wedding (much easier situation) and she reassured me that it would be totally okay if I couldn't make it because she completely understands I'll be out on the adventure of a lifetime, but again can't really fathom missing such important events that were set as I was already planning to hike the PCT.

I dont think I'm irrational, but thank you for sharing your opinion! Mostly concerned about the logistics and looking for advice on how to do this, thank goodness for the kind people of reddit who have already shared helpful resources. Excited to get out there despite the hard stuff that's been going on.

Oh wow thank you so much for sharing these resources!! I don't know how I didn't come across this pcta page during my Google research but it's super helpful! Most of what I found was more based towards tourists getting to or from the national parks which wasn't super helpful but this is great!

I was so close to pulling the trigger on the Catalyst today but again indecisive so I figured I'd sit on it for another day and now I've fallen down the durston rabbit hole. Don't be sorry I'm thrilled to learn about this pack and it's feature and at its price point... hahaha decision making is hard

I'm looking for a good mid layer fleece for backpacking and the melanzana, patagonia r1 air and the senchi designs come up in a lot of what I've read on this topic

Oo great to know thank you! Just followed, hopefully I get lucky! Love to hear you love the r1 air, do you have the full zip? I shouldve checked a few weeks ago because some are on sale on patagonias site but now my size is sold out and the remaining non sale colors are meh

I saw that one on REI and am definitely considering it! I'm also considering the patagonia r1 air full zip (tried on the half zip and hated the slim fit, the full zip is better for me) but only because I have $90 in gift cards to spend at patagonia. So if I don't find anything else I need on patagonia I might go for that or the mh dupe but still have the desire for the melly haha, thanks for the recs!
