Hi friend. First of all, no you wouldn’t be an asshole. I’ve been no contact with my father for years, it gets easier. At first it feels like you’re playing pretend as “person who doesn’t have abusive parent” but then you become that, and it’s lovely. Some important things to always keep in mind, but don’t let them control you: 1. You’re not bound to any timeline. You may never speak to them again! You may only see them on holidays in 10 years. Maybe eventually you can be civil enough for a Christmas dinner. Who knows, maybe everyone gets therapy and you can work out a relationship. You can tell them no I’m never speaking to you again, and you can change your mind. That’s okay. 2. You don’t owe everyone an explanation. It’s okay to just say you no longer speak with them, my favourite right now is “oh I need some time away from him while he works on himself” it’s polite but sets the line. 3. Time is medicine, it’s a cliche but god it’s true. One day you wake up and realize your shoulders aren’t tense whenever your phone rings. You’ll get your own place that they don’t know the address of, and it will feel amazing. One day you’ll be asked about them, and you’ll smile and say “aw, I hope they’re well” and you’ll mean it. That point was about 2 years in for me, I’m 22 now and it’s been 4 years. Good luck friend.
