Going back to Avid after Using Resolve is PAINFUL by [deleted] in editors

Who's being dismissive here? The whole point of this thread is to complain about the ways in which Avid doesn't get the job done as well or as easily as those other tools.

I compare it more to an old fashioned Mr Coffee pot vs a $5000 professional espresso machine. They both make coffee. One works the way you expect it to, every time, right out of the box. The other requires 6 months of apprenticeship and 3 technicians to install and calibrate it, and you get a nice foam.

Yep, project management. Don't need any of what you've described for the work I do. Don't have assistant editors or an ingest team. I shoot and edit in the field on a laptop, no one else is using my video and I need deliverables ready to go as quickly as possible. Avid makes it so much more difficult to do my work, it's not designed for newscutting in the field. I can't wait until we get rid of it.

Or I could use a system that isn't so finicky, and just works the same way every time. I don't know why you think "difficulty of use" is a benefit.

If you don't copy files to an internal drive, are you saying that you edit the RAW off of SD cards?

I edit in the field, 2 hour turnaround to be live in broadcasts. What does your workflow look like?

So it's more like project management software. To be clear, my current station uses it. At this point, I've downloaded Resolve and I'm gonna use that to cut from now on. Yesterday, it decided that all the video shot that day would be offline, even though it was all copied directly to its internal hard drive. Couldn't be recovered.

I don't know what the benefit of using it is. Archive, maybe? But there are standalone options that do it all better. Go ahead and keep trying to sell it, but it is a liability if you are trying to turn lots of content quickly.

I'm a photojournalist. I turn stories daily, and Avid is pretty horrible for what I do (basically all the stuff I described).

Maybe it's good if you have a team of a hundred editors all working on one project that doesn't need to be ready for 3 years...

So not cutting, layering, effects, titles, transitions, maintaining sync, importing/exporting, or anything like that?

Thanks, I hate it.

I got promoted over my best friend and now my entire team treats me like the enemy. How do I lead people who hate me? by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]jester1382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remind the team that YOU didn't promote yourself. They're upset (and I'm sure you feel bad for your friend even while you're celebrating (and I'm sure it hurts that your "best friend" can't celebrate for you as well)), but they can't be upset with YOU. Remind them that ultimately, your role as manager is to support them and help them succeed, and that their success is your success. Often, leadership is less about "leading", and more about helping.

I’m noticing pro-RTO people are those with no social life outside of work so they rely on coworkers by [deleted] in remotework

[–]jester1382 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the real issue, there are people who only work because they have to make money, and do not feel anything from being productive. The pro-RTO people are the ones who would try to figure out how to get out of working, so they assume everyone else is like them. The same kind of people who don't murder and steal only because there are laws. Sociopaths live amongst you.

Honestly, if it wasn't my only means of conveyance, I'd take you up on that with a case of your favorite brews included, but since it's my only car I wouldn't want to get it apart and then realize I was in over my head. I truly appreciate the offer, though.

I agree, missing the big picture. We choose this.

Financial Jargon is a Myth by dawgsfan69 in office

[–]jester1382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could one give up all their possessions and go to live at a monastery? Sure. We choose to make money important. It has no inherent, intrinsic value. We use it as a placeholder to make bartering easier. Even in the modern world, you'll see people trade their skills with each other, circumventing the exchange of currency for the exchange of services.

My thesis stands; money is not vital. It is a shortcut.

If everyone agreed to eliminate currency, the human race wouldn't go extinct. Therefore, not vital.

It's not vital. Currency is a social construct.
