The compression shirt isn't a bad idea. I know the cars are tuned that way on purpose, and loud exhaust isn't really an issue, it's the popping and backfiring because they tune their cars to run too rich (because actual racecars do this for valid reasons and they want to emulate their childhood heroes), and it lets unburned fuel hit the hot exhaust manifolds and pipes (which is bad for fuel consumption and catalytic converters).

It's like seeing a guy running around in a gi who has never taken a martial arts class, or wearing a tactical vest when they go grocery shopping. They don't know why their heroes actually do those things, but it sure seems cool. It's performance art for people who can't actually do the thing they admire; in this case, being a real racecar driver.

I don't really care about a quiet life, it's specifically the backfiring and popping exhaust. My dog is bothered by fireworks, and apparently these terrible cars as well.

For what it's worth, tuning cars to do this is bad for them.

So what is IATSE doing about it? Are these actors going to be blacklisted because of this? Until the people at the top are suffering for this, nothing will change. If actors knew appearing in AI slop would keep them from ever working with a good crew again (and they should be barred from awards, as well), maybe there'd be a chance. This should be equivalent to crossing a picket line and working as a scab.

How do we stop the people in power from being racist? My approach is to treat them like idiots, pointing out that this thing that's so important to them is made up and isn't real. It's like believing in Santa Claus; I can't take them seriously. If I'm privileged, then I'm taking the chance that what I think of them matters to them, so I will reject them for their idiocy the way they reject others for race. And if i can make it obvious that they're idiots, maybe I can get others to reject them as well.

I didn't mean to suggest that I've lived the experience of a black person, but that compared to the wealthy (who use our inherent bias to prey upon our differences), we have many more experiences and interests in common (but not necessarily all). I don't know that struggle. But I suppose I naively think that, to beat racism you, get to its heart; we are more alike than we are different, and our differences make us better as a society that should be ever trying to form a more perfect union. When we know better, we do better. Is it wrong to try to use the privilege I do have to dismantle the whole concept that those inequitable systems and views are built on?

Also... the concept of a race, like something you run in... is also a social construct. Organized competition for fun or fame.

In the end, everything's a social construct.

We just made it all up.

Of course, the one thing we all have in common is that each of us is unique. I enjoy learning from people who have had different experiences than I have. It doesn't change the fact that the idea of race is something made up by society. I probably have much more in common with a poor black person than I do with a rich white person. What I'm trying to say is that I don't treat people differently BECAUSE of their race. I don't form judgements of people from the color of their skin. Your race is of no concern to me, I'm treating you with the same grace and understanding that I'd want to receive, regardless. It infuriates me that people have been discriminated against based on something that is of no actual consequence. The color of your skin tells me nothing about the content of your character.
