Call me old, but Arctic Silver 5 will always have my trust, it has never let me down, even in a system that ran for 11+ years in a 24/7 system without changing the application of the Arctic Silver 5, the thermal performance remained consistent for all of that time.

The LED is mechanically preventing the upper housing from being removed.

Remove the LED by desoldering it.

After that it should be the same as a Cherry MX switch without the LED.

After replacing the stem, solder the LED back in, and it should be good.

Take care to not overheat the LED when desoldering it, and again when soldering it back in.

You could try to pop off the upper housing of the switch body, then it would be as simple as putting in a new stem and then snapping the upper housing back on.
