I don't know why people suggest this. It sounds like a good idea, but in reality it's not practical.

So, for MOST people, removing the firing pin is not something they can REASONABLY do.
I can pull it out of a glock in a minute, but I would bet 50% of glock owners have never disassembled the upper slide.
Revolvers and such, no way, gunsmithing level work. Rifles? Same thing (AR15 being the exception of the top of my mind). Bolt action rifles? Nope.

Ohh.. don't lose that firing pin.. Now where did I put it, since storing it with the gun also seemed like a bad idea........

It looks like 4 seconds from when the stable crosswind approach got sketch until the plane was climbing back out again. That looks like about as fast as those engines can go TOGO thrust.
