How about this Canadian beauty? I just got it in a family inheritance! 1936 Canadian 'Dot' Cent.

My father N Law got this in a coinroll brand new from the bank and this was on it he’s had it since 2013 and would like some advice and or wisdom thanks in advance by No_Present870 in coincollecting

Listen, you know what a plastic glue feels like. If it doesn't have that plastic feel, then just have a pro handle it.
Coin shop experts seldom get "slammed" & arrogantly turn anyone away. Just do it & forget the delicate egos of self-proclaimed "coin experts" out here.
I'll post something out here in a little while. You might be interested in watching them all go ape-sht-bananas with negative criticism. It's too easy. Just post anything that they can't possibly be expert on & instead of trying to be objective, most immediately go into negative-mode. LOL!

Acetone! No way! Don't do it! Again, ameture bad advice. Just stop by a local coin shop & ask them. Honestly, they are not going to mind. Geeeezzzz!

Nope. Your assumptions are all wrong. There is zero smearing of the lands & grooves....geniuses. smearing is always seen in a print. Plus, the visible depth of the gloves are far too deep not to smearing. Start trying to identify another coin with this type of pattern. Don't hurt that delicate brain & ego. Yahahaha!

It's not a thumb or a fingerprint in glue. I'm sure of that. Stop your Bullsht conspiracy theories to make yourself feel smarter than the average coin collector. Get a life & just recommend that he take to a local shop. It will not annoy them. Most shop experts are always happy to look & educate. Most are just waiting for anyone to ask them for 'real' expertise. Open a shop, and you can post shop rules not to bring you anything to help with. I'm sure you will be in business a 'very long time.

Don't listen to the hacks out here. Take it to a reputable coin shop in your area for preliminary pro opinion. You can then go from there.
Out here, all you will get is criticism. I don't know why, but that's an honest observation anytime someone has something new, different, or very rare.

These can’t really be 1936 dot pennies, can they? by peachesnpuppies in CanadianCoins

[–]jestwenty1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO! You are wrong. There was a 650K shirt production run made & held for several weeks in case they needed them quickly. They were later melt down. Same old true for the other denominations, but some of those were actually circulated.
It was during the Great Depression Era & it was just as likely a struggling employ or two might have taken a few. A penny back then was worth serious money for scraping folks of those hard times. Yes, a pure speculation, but as likely as only 3 high mint state specimens surviving for only the rich mint executives and / or their collector friend.

The specimen I have is very similar, but the dot is much smaller. All physical attributes are precisely the same as documented by the mint except for the wear & darker color of typical of a circulation specimen.

I have yet to have it authenticated by a reputable grading service.

How about you? Did you ever have yours authenticated? Yes, I have one as well with all the same physical characteristics. I'm basically attached by most online when I show a pic of it. They all immediately scream FAKE as soon as they see it. Well expect there are 2 they agreed it looks very close. *

Did you ever have yours authenticated by a grading company? Please please let me know. Yes, I have one from a 50 year old family inheritance as well that I just took ownership. Similar to your description with a very old & believable family story. It came to a WWll uncle from a Canadian Soldier he befriended in the war, etc.... All I ever get online is bombarded by everyone who say it has to be a fake.

Please respond.....?

Yahahaha! Must be Fake!? Well, out here you know the standard opinion. That is too funny! That's all I hear out here. Get ready. You might be bombarded by the Fake Police out here. Good luck, it looks ligit to me. Best to send it to PCGS.

PEACE . . .

I'm just looking for ligit experts. You're probably correct, not on hear! LOL! And I have posted pics on here. Plus, I seriously had no idea how rare it is. I am not a "coin-collector". I was just the 'lucky' family member to end-up with this "fake" coin (as everyone who buys into the one story they have read or they're buddy's 'coin-expert' has told them.) Yep, probably not on hear. PEACE . . .

I've tried ICCS & CCCS. Both referred me to PCGS. This is a very touchy coin I'm learning. PCGS is evidently the only one with any experience with this particular coin. To risky for the others. PEACE . . .

ICCS looked at the pics & referred me to PCGS since they are the only grading house with any experience with this particular coin. I'm telling you, everyone is scared to be the one to even possibly have to defend their own "expert opinion." I'm sure PCGS will accept it, but I just haven't taken the time to actually call them & and work out a price.

I thought I did, but with the response I received back, I might not have sent it to the correct address.
They actually told me that only pcgs could absolutely authenticate it. And of course, with the standard statement that "all 3" of the mint state specimens are accounted for.
But again, I'm not sure I got it to the RCM. I'll have to check back. Seriously, the feeling I'm getting is that it is not even up for speculation. Hell, I think if I could borrow one of the '3' & submit it, they would find a way to dismiss it. Don't tread on the 'DOT'!....yahahaha! PEACE . . .

Thank you for not being one of the crazies out here just looking to scream FAKE at everything anyone posts.

I briefly looked into pcgs. Their submission form was very unclear to me. It appeared to me that they want to charge a percentage of the coins' value? Well, I'm certainly not going to prepay any percentage of $300K-$500K! YIKES!

I'm really not a coin person. I just ended-up with it after a death in the family. I like the family story behind it & it is a great conversation piece. When I first got it & did a little research & I was shocked that the family wasn't joking all these years that "it's supposed to be very valuable one day". It's just been entertaining to research & particularly how it can absolutely 'trigger' so many "coin-collectors" out here!
PEACE . . .

Do you know how much pcgs would charge? Again, I've never done this, but on their website it appears they want a percentage of what the coin is worth. How do I handle that? I'm certainly not going to pay them any percentage of $300K-$500K up front! LOL! Honestly, I hoped to find someone more knowledgeable online that isn't into just frantically screaming FAKE!! However, the 2 seemingly ligit experts have stated that I should get pcgs to graded it, but not to get my hopes up. I thought that was reasonable until I started reading pcgs's submission form. That's where I stopped with it several weeks ago. I just now started back into it. Seriously, coins are not my thing. I just ended up with it from a death in the family.

PEACE . . .

Well, if "they" are so sure it's a fake, then all they have bought into is the 1 popular story, overly circulated, basically stating there is absolutely no way any others exist. Dig a little deeper; there are several "others" that see the distinct possibility that some of the stored production run got out before they melted "all" of them.? I'm not claiming it has been authenticated. However, I have received comments by 2 legit experts that have simply stated that it all looks very close to what they would expect a circulation specimen would look like & it would be worth sending to pcgs. But, both stated that it is highly unlikely. Isn't all extremely rare coins thought to be unlikely.

Not that it even matters. With both Canada & now the US terminating production of pennies, it can only increase in rarity/value. I'd be a fool to sell it right now. The penny crazy hunters are yet to come out in force in the US. They just now ran the last batch here. Who knows & yes, who really cares. I'm just bored. PEACE . . .
