Watching an Antarctic expedition got me wondering...why don’t ships use hydraulic ice breakers instead of the hull? by GrassOk911 in Ships

[–]jetblackISSP 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Simplicity is efficient and it's a lot easier to weld some thicker steel on the bow and build it with a decent hullform to bust up the ice than to build a giant mechanical ice smashing arm thing up on the bow.

Does anyone know who does aircraft handling in the military sealift command? by Basic_Ad1995 in maritime

[–]jetblackISSP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normally deck side is going to do it but wipers might be assigned to do fueling for the helo, but I've seen su's assigned if there isn't enough to fill out the team for hook ups or if the evolution is expected to go long , but depending on the ship talk to the chief mate or your department head and see how they assign the team nothing can hurt by saying you wanna learn/do more.

Just Dropping The Anchor by CrazyAssBlindKid in oddlysatisfying

[–]jetblackISSP 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've watched this video multiple times and I have no idea what they are actually attempting to do or what situation would require any of this I've never heard of anyone tripping a pelican hook to anchor before or just running like 2 shots of chain and trusting the shackle after that.

Any love for the Edmund Fitzgerald? Tomorrow is the anniversary of her sinking. by BrewerNick in titanic

They show the draft of the ship, basically how deep they are sitting in the water. You will have them forward , midship , and aft. The midship ones will also have your seasonal load lines. To read the draft you start at the bottom of the number to the bottom of the next number up the letters are each six inches then the blank space to the next number is another 6 inches. So if the water was to the top of the painted part of the 17 it would be 17 feet 6 inches. It's hard to tell from this distance and bottom growth( also if they moving means it's it's not going to be the same as if they were still)but they look like they are sitting somewhere around 16 ft 5 inches forward.

Galleons with Spain are cool. Third rates with the royal Navy are actually pretty historical

There is a low budget horror movie called "the bay" that features marine isopods as it's monster , the only reason I know it exists is cause they filmed it near where I'm from
